Coltrane Delightfull

A bold decorative lighting piece with a contemporary feel, Coltrane has been created with design hotel lobby spaces in mind. Its magnetic cable allows easy height adjustment and positioning. It is available in one- or three-tube ver- sions. www.delightfull.eu

Lutz Pankow loves to deal with the technical aspects of design. He made Zak Zarak to radically change the appearance of desk lamps: instead of complicated mechanisms and lots of bits-and-pieces, he designed a simple flat strip folded into a distinctive geometrical form. Magnets replace the springs and hooks of standard desk lamps. www.ingo-maurer.com

INSTANT

ATTRACTION As well as the obvious appeal of LED, a surprising number of designers seemed to have been drawn to magnets as a component in their lighting creations - often as a means of offering fresh ways to for the user to interact with the piece....

Koala Modo Luce

Koala is a family of lamps that uses the power of a strong magnet to pin to- gether a compact lighting body made of die-casted aluminium with either a wall plate or a metal stand. The body, avail- able with dichroic halogen bulb or LED, can therefore be placed at different heights as well as turned downwards or tilted at an angle of 40°. It is available in aluminium, white, black or one a range of strong block colours. This col- lection is suitable for both indoor and outdoor uses. www.modoluce.com

U-Turn comprises a ball joint base and a round, palm-sized lamp head. In the middle of the head is a magnetic de- pression that connects it to the metalic ball. This mechanism makes it simple and easy to move the lamp head, so that the light can be thrown in any direction. With a simple twist, the lamp head can be detached from the ball, flipped over and put back again totally reversing the orientation of the light source. This mechanism allows U-Turn maximum freedom of movement and enables many different lighting applications. www.belux.com
