Detroit Vehicle Round-Up MULTIMEDIA TRENDS
The one apparent trend in the vehicles this year is the fact that the manufacturers are finally treating sitting in a car as more of an “experience”. From large screens in the center consoles and in the gauges to multimedia options galore, the vehicle driver and passengers can look forward to a much more interactive and informative experience while in the vehicle.
Speaking of multimedia, every single vehicle on the show floor had a stereo mini- plug auxiliary input, a USB port or both. Clearly the manufacturers have realized that people absolutely expect that feature or functionality in their new vehicle, and they have added them. Most cars offer the mini-plug on the radio face or in the center console, so there is still an upgrade opportunity on these models to increase safety and ease of use. Some of the USB ports are not readily
visible, so if you encounter a new vehicle and don’t see a USB port, be sure to check the console and glove box carefully — some have small doors or panels covering them, or they are tucked in a sub-compartment or in a corner. A few models also offer a 12-volt plug in the console as well allowing charging of cell phones and media players while they are out of sight. Also becoming more apparent is the wide range of vehicles certain manufacturers offer. In their attempt to please just about everyone, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, Audi and BMW all seem to have added models between other models that offer a solution for all customers. Ford is still king of the number of models it offers, but Toyota and Chevrolet are just a step behind, and Hyundai is breathing down their necks.
