CES TRENDS

CES was a whirlwind of new products and applications, but if you looked carefully, you noticed that the bevy of products indicated specific similarities.

It’s a race to be thin, but it has nothing to do with diet. In fact, it’s the opposite—suppliers are in a race to grow the number of vehicle applications they fit with smaller, low-profile designs that meet the needs of weight- and space-conscious buyers.

JL Audio’s JX500/1D Amplifier Moving to Class D from Class AB, the new version is 43 percent

smaller in size and just 2 inches high. Power output of 300 watts @ 4 ohms; 400 watts @ 3 ohms; or 500 watts @ 2 ohms. MSRP: $329

Alpine’s PDX-V9 5-channel Digital Amplifier This amp boasts 50 percent more power than its predecessor

and can also be used in a 3-way active system. Delivers 100W RMS x 4 + 500W x 1. MSRP: $699.95

JL Audio JX500/1D Monoblock Amplifier

Hertz HDP Series Amplifiers The HDP4, the smallest in the three-model group, is a 4-channel non-bulky, booming Class D-amp that delivers 1,000 watts into 2 channels at 4 ohms—and its smallest dimension is just 12 inches. MSRP: $659.99

Kicker’s PX Power Amps—the PX100.2 and PX200.1 Super small footprint (2 inches high by 3 ½-inches wide) created with power-sport vehicles in mind; new “Direct Amp” technology uses vehicle’s charging system as power supply for 90 percent efficiency. MSRP: $199.95 each
