India’s Doordashan wins Japan Prize


My Classroom during the Japan Prize award ceremony in Tokyo on 27 October. The TV proposal prize is given to an entry which excels at fostering literacy and education, contributing to the spread of basic education. It offers a citation, US$3,000 and support to make the programme.

ABU News spoke with Doordarshan’s Special Correspondent Emani Krishna Rao about his proposal, which bagged him his sixth major international award.


“With the globalisation of the Indian economy, many youngsters are shifting to urban areas and not showing any interest in agriculture. This is a dangerous trend for a country which has traditions of (agricultural) biodiversity and self sufficiency in grain production,” Mr Rao explained.


“As India is on the threshold of becoming a major economy like China, I feel it is my duty as a public broadcaster to remind the younger generation about the importance of food production in a developing economy.”


Mr Rao’s programme revolves around a little girl who wants to reconnect to age-old traditions, crop cultivation methods and foods. She wants

Leading Sri Lankan broadcaster dies


Prominent Sri Lankan broadcaster Mano Wikra- manayake died in Colom- bo at the age of 62.


Mr Wikramanayake died on 3 December while be- ing taken to hospital after he had collapsed.


He was Group Director, Electronic Media Busi- ness, of the Maharaja Group (MTV), which runs three terrestrial television channels, four FM radio stations and three TV production companies.

“I plan to shoot from December to February and complete post production by May,” he said. “I would like to follow it up by per- suading the government to make environmental education part of the curriculum in schools. If children learn about the environment and tradi- tional cultivation methods, I am sure they will revive all the wonderful crops that were planted just few years back.


“The practice of mono- cropping must give way to multicropping and I am sure the youngsters will show the way.”


He was directly respon- sible for all the group’s media operations. He was also part of the team responsible for strategic planning for the group and a member of all the boards of directors of the group’s companies.


Mr Wikramanayake began his working life as an accountant before moving into the media. He was a board mem- ber and former Vice President of the Com- monwealth Broadcasting Association.


His death came only a few weeks after he took an active part in the ABU’s annual meetings in New Delhi in November, making a number of presentations.
