Norhyati Ismail, Director General of RTM-Malaysia, said: “While main- taining conventional producing and broadcasting, new and alternative media is the platform for ABU to explore and enhance collaborations in the co-production of programmes that can be televised by its members to reach a wider audience.”
Jun Ogawa, Director of International Affairs and Strategy, TBS-Japan, noted that content is more important now and broadcasters must be in tune with the expectations of their viewers.
Roles and responsibilities
Tripurari Sharan, Director General, DDI-India, said that broadcasting has a role in promoting diversity, disseminating information and educating.
In response to the role of broad- casting as a medium for global understanding and peace, Michael McCluskey, CEO of ABC Radio- Australia, said that broadcasting can reflect true cultural values. Through

Seyed Ezzatollah Zarghami, Presi- dent of IRIB-Iran, said that broad- casters need to consider signi ficant subjects such as peace, theism, helping people and meeting real needs. The mobilisation of the ABU members’ capacities to meet such goals must be emphasized, he said.
Giulio Masasso Paunga, Director of TBC-Tonga, said that it is important for the Pacific media organisations such as TBC to align with ABU, and to participate and support its activi- ties.
Nguyen Tien Long, Director of the International Cooperation Department of VOV-Vietnam, said that countries such as Vietnam are facing major issues with making the digital switchover. He said broadcasters are learning from others and suggested that the ABU facilitate a forum for this as well as find a relevant standard.
Mano Wikramanayake, then Group Director of MTV-Sri Lanka, said that its 20-channel network had failed to generate profit, making the prospect of investing in set-top boxes even more prohibitive.
He lamented the lack of clear-cut policy on spectrum availability with regard to digital spectrum allocation. He suggested that members work together to overcome these challenges.
