ABU’s projects and training workshops.
The meeting was chaired by Dr Michael McCluskey of Radio Australia. During the session, Zakiah Halim of MediaCorpSingapore and Behrouz Razavi Nejad of IRIBIran were also appointed as the new Vice Chairpersons of the Radio Working Party.
Presenting her report to the committee, Vijay Sadhu, Senior Executive (Radio) of the ABU, re- ferred to the opportunities offered to members for content exchange, staff training and content devel- opment.
She outlined the extensive range of projects through- out the year, the ABU UNESCO workshops on user-generated content; online training of trainers; incountry workshops in India, Thailand, Indonesia and China; the RadioAsia 2011 conference and a capacitybuilding work- shop on HIV for TV pro- ducers and journalists.
Mrs Sadhu said two major projects were in the pipeline: the ABU Radio Song Festival and World Summit on Media for Children.
During the meeting, there was a presentation of case studies from China, Japan,
India, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia and Europe.
After a series of discus sions, the Radio Working Party made several recommendations:
• That resources within the ABU be assessed to give more Secretariat support to the Radio Working Party and ra- dio industry because of the need for significant change and collabora- tive work within the industry and across all nations and among members
• That future Radio Working Party meetings
Borhanuddin Osman and Jennifer Chou were among the panelists
be extended to a fullday conference
• That the Radio Working Party have a higher profile and status within the ABU Programming Department to ensure it is not continuously overshadowed by TV
• That the ABU Program- ming Department be reviewed to take into account the changing media environment in- cluding multiplatform web- and mobile-based media and social media and the need for radio and TV to adapt and change.
• That the Radio Working Party will develop a strategic plan which will define its purpose and will set strategic objectives, actions and performance indicators to assist members in the years to come
The Radio Working Party members also recom- mended that the ABU focus on strong radio de- velopment projects, espe- cially in disaster manage- ment. A request was made for an Emergency Warning and Disaster Broadcast- ing forum/conference to be included as part of the next RadioAsia conference in 2012.
