(TRT) began radio broadcast in 1927 and television broadcast in 1968, pioneering many innovations in the field of broadcasting in Turkey.

“TRT introduced many improvements to Turkey’s broadcasting sector and was responsible for breakthroughs such as colour TV broadcasts, live broadcasts, multi-channel broadcasts, the first series and the first documentary films,” says İbrahim Şahin, who was recently re- elected as TRT’s Director General, a position he has held since 2007.

Until the early 1990s, TRT was the sole radio- television broadcaster in Turkey.

“With the emergence of private radio and tele- vision channels, TRT experienced a period of stagnation. However, in recent years, it has revamped and regained its position as industry leader,” Mr Şahin says.

Much of this revival has occurred during Mr

Şahin’s tenure. “We are the biggest media group in Turkey,” says Mr Şahin. Today, TRT reaches 99 percent of Anatolia and 70 percent of the world’s five continents.

Embracing technology

There was a time when there was a great disparity in the technology used by private channels and that which was employed

by TRT. Mr Şahin admits that in the past, there had been denial as to the seriousness of this situation. However, he says: “technical invest - ments have increased eight-fold during my directorate”.

“I instructed that all technicians be trained in the latest technological improvements but when it was found that this

was not enough, I sent a majority of the technical personnel abroad for train- ing so that they would be up to speed with the latest developments in the world.”

As a result of these measures, TRT now has virtual studios, cameras without cameramen, and new transmitter systems, in addition to the ability to broadcast in HD and 3D and over 3G networks.

Mr Şahin adds: “TRT has been digitalising its 120,000 hours of TV archive material and shares these digital archives with broadcaster unions”.

Over the past two-and- a-half years, TRT has launched 10 new channels – which is a considerable achievement.

Currently, TRT has 14 TV channels, six national radio channels, two international channels
