broadcasting if they want to stay connected to their audience. New media offers a wide spectrum of opinion, he said, but the mainstream media has to put a story on the front page for the new media to gain any traction.


He also said it would be a mistake to undervalue the intelligence of viewers.


The overall chairman of the seminar, Martin Had- low, Associate Professor at the University of Queens- land, moderated the fourth session.


The first speaker, Usha Bhasin of DDI, said that while the private media in


India sometimes promoted good governance, there were examples of unethi- cal reporting and sensa- tionalism could be seen on TV every day.


She said that ethics is not at the core – money and power were.


On another issue, she also described how DDI is promoting health issues through a weekly programme called ‘Kalyani’.

national broadcaster embraced diversity through of training and capacity building.


Workplace diversity has to be initiated from the top, she said, adding that there also needs to be a legal framework to ensure diversity.


Mr Ahamed of YATV said he sometimes felt that instead of being the watch- dog of democracy, the media were simply dogs watching, most of the time.


Good governance needed a robust, active and inde- pendent media. The media should not be in the hands of either the government or a big corporation, Mr Ahamed said.
