ABU urged to set up training centre in India

The Secretary of India’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry Uday Kumar Varma made the call in a keynote address at the opening ceremony. He promised all possible help from the Indian government.


Mr Varma said India could offer a lot to the ABU in terms of capacity


he General Assembly heard a call for the ABU to set up a world-class broadcasting and


building, technology and content creation.


He described capacity building as a major challenge for any government, especially in the media and enter- tainment area.


Prasar Bharati Chairperson Mrinal Pandey told the General Assembly that the corporation was in the process of expanding its network to reach the entire population in the country.


She said All India Radio covered 99 percent of the population while Doordarshan was the largest terrestrial network, covering 93 percent of the population.


The ABU Acting President, Ibrahim Yahaya, said new technologies would provide many opportunities for broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific region.


Ultimately the media had to be in step with global progress, he said.


The ABU General Assembly saw the election of IRIB-Iran to the Ad- ministrative Council for a three-year term until 2014.


This is IRIB’s third term on the Council. It previously served from 2005 to 2007 and from 2008 to 2010.


The Assembly also re-elected MNB- Mongolia and RTPRC-China each for a three-year term.


As there was no quorum of Ad- ditional Full Members during the General Assembly, a postal ballot was held. HUM TV-Pakistan was

re-elected to the Administrative Council while RTHK-Hong Kong was elected for a three-year term until 2014.


IRIB elected to Admin Council casting (IRIB)


Previously, RTHK served from 2005 to 2007 and from 2008 to 2010.
