7 A NEW SPACE FOR SPORT PUTS REGION ON MAP FOR 2012 OLYMPICS
The North East is set to be put on the Olympic map following the unveiling of an innovative new sports development at Durham University. Architectural firm _space group has
completed a three-phase, £5 million project, which has seen the creation of a new high performance training centre for rowing, alongside the extension and refurbishment of the existing Graham Sports Centre and the construction of a new purpose built boat house at Maiden Castle, in Durham. This magnificent project has been
primarily funded by Durham University with a significant Lottery contribution from Sport England of £500,000. Durham University will host Sri
Lanka’s athletes ahead of the Lon- don 2012 Olympic Games at both
Maiden Castle and Queen’s Campus in Stockton-on-Tees. The high-tech rowing tank simul-
ates the movement and feel of a boat through water, which is powered through hydraulically efficient channels by submersible electric pumps. The speed of flow can be adjusted electroni- cally to give any speeds up to three metres per second. Alongside the state of the art ind-

mission – a purpose built boathouse – allows for the quick and efficient launch of boats onto the river as well as prov-
iding much needed room for storage,
repair and workshop space. In keeping with both planning and
Environmental Agency requirements, the boat house has been designed to be sym- pathetic to the surrounding landscape and is ‘floodable’ up to 1.6m high, as the building lies in a National Flood Zone.

Stride Treglown landscape archi- tecture & masterplanning teams have joined forces to create a bright and integrated future for Cardiff ’s Capital Square. The new designs for Cardiff Capital Square aim to provide a world class destination and a gateway to Wales.
Plans include an 80m long land-
mark water feature ‘the Taff Wall’, dra- matic furnace-inspired red lighting, a green ‘living wall’ stretching 60m and a Welsh Garden replicating the nation’s landscape. The first phase will focus on Central Square, with plans for a new bus station being drawn up.
Construction firm GB Building Solutions has won the contract to build a new £6 million care home in Salisbury for Gracewell Healthcare. Gracewell’s new Salisbury Manor
care home will consist of 62 bedrooms over three storeys and will also include nursing and dementia care. The building will be constructed
within a conservation area and in tradi- tional Georgian design, maintaining the original elegant 1840 façade. Martin Smout, chairman and chief
executive of GB Building Solutions said: “Over the last six years we have built up an impressive track record of constructing care schemes across the country undertaking £340 million of schemes and providing more than 2,400 beds. “This new care home in Salisbury
will add to our experience and marks the beginning of a new working rela- tionship with Gracewell Healthcare." The home has been especially
designed both for residents who like a peaceful caring environment and those who wish to continue an active lifestyle. The ground floor will offer residents
and visitors a library and computer corner with WIFI, together with a chic café serving gourmet food. Residents and their visitors can also enjoy a luxury lifestyle gift shop, a New York-style nail bar and a beauty spa. Tim Street, chief executive officer of

BALFOUR BEATTY AWARDED COMMERCIAL PROPERTY SCHEMES TOTALLING £100 MILLION
Balfour Beatty has announced that it has been awarded construction con- tracts in the commercial sector totalling £100 million. In Glasgow, Balfour Beatty has
been awarded an £18 million contract for 185-221 Buchanan Street for Land Securities to provide a new five- storey residential and retail scheme in the city centre. In the City of London, Balfour
Beatty has been awarded a two phase contract, totalling £57 million, to construct AXA Real Estate’s Sixty London prime office develop- ment. The company has also won a £25 million contract to deliver an 11-storey office building in the heart of London’s financial centre for Viridis Real Estate Service Ltd on behalf of their client Emmatown Properties Ltd.
On both London schemes, a high
percentage of the building services engineering will be delivered using Building Information Modelling (BIM) and off-site prefabrication solutions to reduce waste and increase efficiencies. All three projects are due for com-
pletion in 2013. Commenting on the awards,
Balfour Beatty chief executive Ian Tyler said: “We are delighted to see encouraging signs of renewed activity in the London commercial sector and to be able to demonstrate our diverse capabilities, which enable us to take advantage of such growth opportuni- ties.
