Weymouth and Portland provide some the best natural sail- ing waters in the UK, with facilities on land to match. Work to enhance the sailing facilities has been completed, and the site has already hosted numerous international sailing events. Additions to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing
Academy facilities include a new permanent 250m slipway and new lifting and mooring facilities. The project was com- pleted on budget and ahead of schedule, proving world-class facilities for elite athletes and the local community, more than three years before the Games. The Olympic Delivery Authority’s contractor Dean &
Dyball began construction work in March 2008 to enhance the existing sailing facilities with the construction of a new permanent 250m slipway and new race-boat parking, lifting and mooring facilities. Some 70,000 tonnes of Portland stone were put in place to
reclaim 18,000 sq m of land in front of the sailing academy to form the new slipway. Work was also completed on a 200m breakwater to protect the enhanced facilities, and to create a new pier offering two yacht lifting cranes, and a new pontoon to provide 70 berths for race boats. Together with the ODA's enhancement works at
Weymouth & Portland, Dean & Reddyhoff, developers for the South West Regional Development Agency built a new 560-berth commercial marina at Osprey Quay of which 250 berths will be used during the 2012 Games. The marina includes retail and industrial development bringing regenera- tion to the local area. Merlin Entertainments – the company behind attractions
including the London Eye – has put forward plans to build a £3 million viewing tower at Weymouth seafront. Up to 50 visitors at a time would be allowed to the top of the 53m structure on Festival Pier, which would offer views of the seafront and harbour.
