EDUCATION FOCUS

Health Environment & Infrastructure (HEI) is designed for companies who provide products, services, offer build- ing, design and maintenance of health- care facilities and are looking to gener- ate leads within the healthcare sector. HEI is a regional one day event,

which has been specifically designed to appeal to the busy healthcare decision makers and trusts that want to access the very best in safe, secure and sustain-

able healthcare products and services. After the success of the very first

HEI event in Tunbridge Wells on November 9, 2011, Ascent Events have announced a series of regional events to run across the UK and beyond for 2012. The next HEI event will be held

in Leeds on 22 February 2012, fol- lowed by: Bristol – April 25, 2012 Liverpool/London – June 2012

Dublin – September 2012 Birmingham –November 2012 Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS

Trust is the largest NHS Trust in the UK, employing over 14,000 staff on six main sites throughout the city and sur- rounding areas. The Trust is currently applying for Foundation Trust status, which will give the Trust greater flexi- bility and freedom in how they develop and invest in providing local healthcare.

managing director Elaine Siew and devel- opment director David Acklam, com- prises 100 per cent of the operational and consultancy businesses, together with 25 per cent of the investments. Assura LIFT currently manages a

property portfolio – valued at £214 million – across five LIFT companies, as well as managing seven further bui- ldings in construction worth £54 million. By the end of the year 2012, it is estimated that the combined total of the portfolios will reach £300 million.

Elaine Siew commented: “Assura

LIFT has developed into the substan- tial business that it is today through the ongoing support of the Assura Group and we will continue to work closely with them during the next phase of our development.” The past 12 months has seen seve- ral high profile partnership schemes

involving Assura LIFT moving forward and being delivered through NHS LIFT programmes. These include the £22.5 million City of Coventry Health Centre due for completion in early 2012; the new £27 million Finchley Memorial Hospital and Walk-in Centre also set to open in 2012; and the devel- opment of two new primary care centres in Westcliff equipped to meet the needs of the 21st century and scheduled for delivery in the Spring of 2013. Elaine Siew, commenting on the

MBO, said: “Whilst continuing to con- centrate on the LIFT end of our busi- ness, we are looking to expand our prop- erty development and consulting activi- ties, focusing on the public sector and the opportunities that will continue to emerge from estate rationalisation.”

101 MINISTER PROMOTES SKILLS FOR THE GREEN DEAL

Climate change minister Greg Barker has launched a partnership to ensure the UK has the right skills to imple- ment the Green Deal, the government’s flagship policy to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. The Green Deal aims to enable

private firms to offer consumers energy improvements to their homes, commu- nities and businesses at no upfront cost and to recoup payments as a charge in installments on the energy bill. The Green Deal Skills Alliance

(GDSA), officially launched by the Minister, is working to create new training and accreditation for the energy assessment, advice and installa- tion workforce; the people who will carry out the improvements. The GDSA is made up of three Sector Skills Councils: Asset Skills, CITB- ConstructionSkills and SummitSkills. Climate change minister Greg Barker said: “The success of the Green

Deal will, in part, come down to having people who have the right skills and knowledge to instill trust. The Green Deal Skills Alliance will help industry face the challenges ahead so people get the right training and qualifications they will need in order to gain work under the Green Deal.” The Green Deal is due to launch in

October and could see uptake within 14 million homes and create 65,000 jobs by 2015. Chief executive designate of Asset

Skills Sarah Bentley said: “The new skills programmes we are introducing as part of the GDSA are important for the UK to meet its targets on cutting carbon. The partnership is running a series of Green Deal Connections events to raise awareness that only those with the right qualifications will be able to secure work from the Green Deal.” Mark Farrar, chief executive of CITB-ConstructionSkills, said: “It is

vital that firms, particularly SMEs, are able to meet demand for the construc- tion of low carbon technology as well as knowing how not to fall foul of chang- ing regulations. We want to help SMEs understand the impact of new legisla- tive requirements affecting carbon emissions and develop the right skills to respond to this demand. We need to ensure that government and larger con- tractors adequately support SMEs in meeting green skills needs.” Keith Marshall OBE, chief executive

of Summit Skills said: “There has been so much talk about the Green Deal that not surprisingly many employers tell us they are unsure of where to start to prepare their people to support and take advantage of the initiative. The Green Deal Connections events will guide visitors through the mass of information towards exactly what potential installers of environmental technologies need to know.”
