Advanced performance thermally efficient windows, featuring frames manufactured solely from recycled PVC-U, have been supplied to a Birmingham shel- tered housing scheme. Manufactured by Framexpress and installed by contractor, Berben Group, 128 recy- cled windows were specified by Yardley Great Trust at its Foliot Fields site, a supported living scheme for older people. Made using the new recycled low carbon RECO22 window framing system from Profile 22,
the carbon footprint of the extruded window profile is just six per cent of that man- ufactured using virgin material. As residents remained in occupancy throughout the project, full consultation with them and close working between partners formed a central tenet of project delivery.

A detailed and informative Guide to Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in the Urban Landscape has been published as part of the Engineering Nature’s Way initiative by Hydro International. The guide can be downloaded for free. It is jointly authored by Prof Richard Ashley of EcoFutures, Sue Illman of Illman Young Landscape architects and Alex Stephenson, Stormwater director of Hydro International and chair of the British Water SuDS focus group. Topics consid-

A unique SuDS-compliant paving system comprised of recycled car tyres is being used to boost the eco- credentials of landscaping provided at the Olympic Village. The Sudscape system is being used on 460 sq metres of pathways within the residential court- yards of the Athletes’ village. Landscape Architects Macfarlane Wilder, who are the appointed Landscape Architects for blocks N10 and N14, chose Sudscape for a number of reasons. The Sudscape System does not
require a concrete or tarmac base, a key consideration for roof top landscaping where access for installation equipment is difficult. Use of the system also eliminates the risk of standing water or flooding – Sudscape has its own built-in rubber sub-base using recycled car tyres, with a top layer comprised of resin and aggregate.

Network VEKA is one of 33 national organisations to be chosen for assessment under the Green Deal ini- tiative. UKAS will now assess all the bodies. Final plans for the Green Deal have yet to be revealed by the government but any inclusion of replacement win- dows will mean installers will have to be accredited by one of the chosen bodies from the UKAS list. Network VEKA MD, John Ogilvie said: “The Green Deal is likely to have a major influence on the way

Provian Constructionhas completed a series of works at Viridor’s landfill site in Beddington, helping it to become one of the UK’s most technically-advanced landfills while creating wildlife habitats. When all ten of the landfill cells are full, the site will be restored to create a variety of habitats and breeding areas for rare species of birds and other animals. To bring the 92- hectare landfill up to the highest environmental stan- dards whilst it remains in operation, leading recycling,
renewable energy and waste management company Viridor appointed one of Kent’s main contractors, Provian. Designed by consulting civil engineers Peter Baxter Associates the works included flood alleviation, creation of wildlife habitats, new cell preparation and also allow the control and monitoring of landfill leachate.

The stunning new headquarters building for KfW Bank in Frankfurt, which features extensive use of Wicona unitised curtain walling, has won a major global architectural award. The prestigious accolade for the World’s Best Tall Building has been awarded to the KfW project by the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). This is the second time the CTBUH has recognised a Wicona project. In 2009 the Tornado Tower in Doha, another appli-

cation of Wicona unitised curtain walling, was presented with the award for the Best Tall Building in the Middle East. The CTBUH awards highlight projects from across the world that have made ‘extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment’.
