would have admitted noise and pollution. The need for this is reduced by the large underground con-


crete ducts that exchange heat and coolness with the ground. The earth tube vents used have been painted colourfully to


encourage pupils’ interest in sustainability. For the same reason, a building management system records the occupancy and energy use of zones of different parts of the school and makes information available to both managers and to pupils, so that they can see their energy usage. A small combined heat and power plant heats the swimming


pool, and feeds heat into the schools’ main plant when the pool is not in use. Highbury Grove is now a successful school, as is shown by a

photographic gallery running most of the length of the main corridor, of pupils with outstanding examination results. That, of course, is down to the efforts of staff and students,


but the new building’s layout, facilities and appearance must surely have helped.
