(Sustainable Urban Drainage System) helps to drain the higher level playing fields and its dipping pond figures as part of science and ecology education. The scheme secured a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. The exterior of the building uses a robust pale Ibstock brick at
lower levels and white render at the upper to bounce light back into the courtyards, with splashes of colour and large lettering to denote the name of the Academy on its lead elevation. The over- all impression is of a calm, mature, and rigorously ordered place for learning. “We’re very pleased that wherever you are in the building
there are always multiple views of the outside,” says Mirchandani. “There’s daylight everywhere. It’s orientation, but it’s also the pleasure of that visual connection to the outside. It’s the quality of that relationship and daylight and legibility. I think the circu- lation works very well too – it’s very simple, but its simplicity is part of its success.”
