roof was also vital to the structural considerations. Built using a steel frame diagonally braced above courtroom roof level but sta- bilised by frame connections and masonry shear walls, the struc- ture is an iconic local landmark. To assess the lateral loads and identify the masonry shear walls
providing stability, Gifford built a 3D analysis model. “Minimal alteration was permitted to key walls,” says Forder. Another major issue was security and balancing this with a
Grade II listed building also proved difficult. “To get a certain museum status and bring in certain exhibits,
you need a lot of security,” adds James. “Putting up the CCTV cameras onto a Grade II listed building was a big challenge and we had to compromise by putting cameras up at the rear where someone might come with a lorry to steal stuff out of the goods entrance.” Up to 4,000 artefacts will be housed in the Sea City Museum
and many will be moved there from their original home at Southampton’s Museum of Archaeology and the Maritime Museum, which was closed to the public from 26 September 2011 as removal begun. When the new museum finally opens, it will feature three
exhibitions. The two permanent sections will cover the role of the city as ‘Gateway to the World’ and ‘Southampton's Titanic Story’, and a temporary exhibition about the ‘Legend of the Titanic’ will run for the first year. The opening date is hard to avoid: April 10, 2012. This ship should stay afloat far longer.
