TECHNICAL ADVISER APPOINTMENT FOR £40 MILLION NEW STUDENT RESIDENCES PROJECT


Pick Everard has won a major scheme in Wales, having recently celebrated the opening of its new office in Cardiff. The firm is appointed as technical adviser on the procurement of the Penglais Farm New Student Residences Project at Aberystwyth University, a new 1,000-bed hall of residence valued at £40 million. The University is seeking a private sector project partner to design, build, finance and operate the development and is currently at competitive dia- logue stage with three shortlisted contractors; Sir Robert McAlpine, Miller Construction and Balfour Beatty Student Accommodation. Appointed under the government Procurement Service Management


and Full Design Team Services Framework Agreement, Pick Eve- rard’s role is providing technical advice about overall build quality and advising on the merits, suitability and costs of different construction methods and programmes being put forward. Whole life costing of the building will be critical to ensure that best value can be achieved. Subject to planning approval, the


new halls of residence will be located on Penglais Farm, on land adjacent to the existing award-winning Pentre Jane Morgan student village. Building work is planned to begin in late 2012 with the first students expected to take up residence in September 2014.


ICONIC UNIVERSITY RESTORED


When a replacement fenestration pro- gramme was proposed for the iconic Falmer House at the University of Sussex, Crittall was contracted to supply a selection of its Corporate W20 profiles and Corporate 2000 cold form doors for the project. The building, which houses various


University services and the University of Sussex Students’ Union, was designed by famous architect Sir Basil Spence in the 1960s. Brick faced with a vault and column structure and extensive glazing, the unusual building is the first to be seen when entering the campus. The window replacement scheme is


part of a multi-million pound venture to upgrade the self-contained site, which was awarded a bronze medal from RIBA for its design and architecture and which enjoys a Grade I listed status for a development of exceptional interest. It is also one of the most beautiful campus locations in Britain, being situated in rolling parkland on the


edge of Brighton and bordered by the South Downs National Park. The window specification therefore had


to be sensitive to the original design crite- ria and not detract from the visual appear- ance of the building. Crittall supplied its Corporate W20 profiles as a like-for-like replacement.

In September 2013 the Guildhall School’s additional new building Milton Court will open. The new building will offer state of the art facilities to match the talent within its walls, ensur- ing that students can enter their chosen profession at the highest level.


Milton Court Milton Court will have a new state-of- the-art 610 seat concert hall plus two theatres (225 seat and studio), three rehearsal rooms, TV studio suite, departments for costume, wigs and make-up, office space, tutorial rooms and public foyers. This will allow the School to increase its programme in terms of variety, scope and volume, whilst continuing to attract the most highly regarded teachers and best stu- dents internationally.


The Concert Hall The Concert Hall in Milton Court will be a flexible, professional venue in which young instrumentalists and singers will rehearse and perform. It will be suitable for solo recitals, chamber ensembles and medium sized orchestral perform- ances, plus rehearsals for a full-sized sym- phony orchestra. The acoustics designed by industry


experts Arup Associates, will be of the highest quality. With 610 seats on two levels, the hall will have the largest capac- ity of any of the London conservatoires – comparable with the Wigmore


School’s single largest space and demands placed on it are high. The new 225 seat theatre in Milton Court will have seats on three levels and optional forestage and will provide more space and enhanced training experience. For actors it will complement the


Hall – with public performances in the heart of the City of London that show- case the talent of the School’s musicians.


The Theatre The current Silk Street Theatre is the


training currently offered by providing direct experience of rehearsing and per- forming in a traditional proscenium arch, multi-level theatre, a format com- monly found across the UK and requir- ing training in specific acting skills. The professional-standard technical


facilities will allow students to gain expe- rience of using the latest stage technolo-


gies that are crucial for gaining employ- ment in the most sophisticated theatres and performance venues.


Studio Theatre The new Studio Theatre will provide a flexible performance space to comple- ment the School’s other two theatres. In contrast to the larger main Theatre at Milton Court, it will give actors experi- ence of performing in an intimate, adapt- able space (12.5m by 18.7m) before an audience of up to 128 people seated in various formats. It will emulate the many small, adaptable spaces the actors will work in professionally outside the big playhouses. The School’s theatre techni- cians will learn to accommodate the demands of contemporary theatrical performances, using the small technical teams and tighter budgets that they will encounter in spaces such as those found in London’s off-West End venues.


Designed by David Walker Architects and the RHWL Arts Team, Milton Court is an integral part of a bigger development – The Heron – by Heron International. The Heron is the first major residential development in the City of London for over 30 years, com- prising 284 apartments over 36 floors. Two Foundation Donors have been key to the Milton Court project – the City of London Corporation has given the School the site, and Heron International will give the School the building.
