PUPILS HELP ACHIEVE ‘VERY GOOD’ ECO STANDARDS
A BREEAM rating of ‘very good’ is set to be achieved at a new primary school built through eco strategies supplied by Passivent to requirements in part determined by the pupils. Kent County Council commissioned the new Warden Bay Primary School to provide additional learning resources for 210 children. Designers, Hartwell Architects, consulted with the teachers and pupils on what sustainable strategies they would like included in the new school and implemented those as far as possible in the new building. As a result, the aircraft wing inspired structure is ventilated entirely naturally, using a combination of cross ventilation solutions sup- plied by the UK’s leader in the field, Passivent. Natural daylight also plays a major role, using six of Passivent’s Sunscoop SR98 tubular rooflghts, each 530mm dia, along corridors and teaching areas within. A total 23 Passivent Window Aircool ventilators draw in fresh air at high level on the single storey facade, avoiding draughts, while a further 34 ‘dummy’ Aircools provide aesthetic harmony.

CHANGE TO ATTRACT VISITORS
Latest figures show that visitors with disabilities account for a market worth £2 billion to English tourism. Simultaneously, the Changing Places Consortium, which lobbies for fully accessible toilets, reports an acceleration in the number of attractions installing its specification of toilet. Under latest British Standards it is ‘good practice’ to install a Changing Places toilet in buildings to which large numbers of the public have access. In the last four months alone, over 50 Changing Places toilets – which cater for people with profound and multiple learning dis- abilities and other people with severe disabilities who need the support of at least one carer – have been opened at venues across the country, bringing the total to over 300. Total Hygiene supplies disabled toileting solutions, from simple grab rails through the Clos-o-Mat ‘wash and dry’ toilet, which eliminates the need for manual cleansing by toileter or carer, to complete Changing Places toilets. The pro- vision of equipment is complimented by in-house design.
