procured and was split into two parts with separate contracts for the temporary 16,000-seat stands and specialist work installing and maintaining competition and training pitches. Unlike many aspects of the Olympic facilities, the hockey
park was not procured by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) but directly by LOCOG, which has taken charge of all temporary facilities. A planning application for work on the Hockey Centre was
submitted to the ODA Planning Decisions Team on 25 March 2011, when the decision to use blue pitches was confirmed with a design by architects, Populous, featuring the visually striking blue pitch with a pink surround.
Populous principal Jeff Keas says: “We see this venue as one of
the four cornerstones of the Olympic Park and have designed a venue that takes advantage of this opportunity. The design is unique in that it allows the atmosphere and action on the blue pitch to be enhanced, by allowing views in from the Park as well as views out to the Park and the backdrop of this city.” In July 2011, the winners of the construction and installation
contracts were confirmed. GL Events Owen Brown will erect the temporary stands. A contract to design, install and maintain the hockey pitches for four years was bagged by Sports Technology International (STI), which also installed the hockey pitches at the 2008 Olympics at Beijing in China and the FIH men’s World
