SAINT-GOBAIN PAM UK PROVIDES A ‘CLASSICAL’ SOLUTION TO GRADE II* LISTED ROUNDHOUSE REFURBISHMENT

Originally constructed in 1839 for the repair of locomotives by Robert Stephenson, the stunning 16-sided polygon Grade II* Listed Roundhouse building in Derby had lain empty for decades and was in a serious state of dilapidation prior to its recent com- plete lottery-funded refurbishment. An important part of the pioneering transformation of the Roundhouse was an obligation to complement the char- acter of the original premises and this prompted the architect to opt for Saint-Gobain PAM UK’s ‘Classical’ cast iron rainwater and gutter system to maintain architectural integrity and building aesthetics. Manufactured at the Saint-Gobain

PAM UK Telford site, the ‘Classical’ 150mm half round gutter with 100mm circular downpipes were supplied to the project in a Grey Polymer Powder Epoxy (PPA571) finish coat. Designed in accordance with BS 460 and assessed and approved by British Board of Agrement Certificate 97/3434 – the only cast iron manufacturer with third party accreditation – the ‘Classical’ range is recognised for its aesthetic charm, strength to withstand high winds, heavy snow and vandalism and, above all, its long life capabilities. There are eight Classical Gutter pro-

files available in a number of diameters: Standard half round, Deep half round, Beaded half round, Victorian ogee,

DULUX TRADE PAINTS BRIGHTEN £1.5 MILLION PASSIVHAUS OFFICE

office was designed by CPMG archi- tects of Nottingham, and constructed by Interserve in partnership with the park developer Raynsway Properties. As part of the Passivhaus standard, a number of specific measures were included in the design of the project, such as earth tubes, increased levels of insulation and airtightness and an ultra-efficient mechanical ventilation heat recovery plant, all of which help contribute to the building’s overall Zero Carbon energy performance. To complement these elements, the project team also required a range of paints that would further boost the environmental credentials of the office space. Jason Smith from paint contractors,

Dulux Trade coatings have been used in a pioneering project for Interserve Construction Limited at Watermead Business Park, Leicestershire. A range of high performance paints, including Dulux Trade Diamond Matt Light & Space and Diamond Eggshell, were used on the interior of the build- ing, which is one of only three Passivhaus offices in the country. Interserve’s new regional £1.5 million

Swirlforce, who worked on the Interserve office, explains: “Working in partnership with the Dulux Trade apecification account manager, Janet Robertson and Interserve, we devel- oped a bespoke collection of coatings to meet the exacting needs of the project. One specific requirement, for example, was to maximise natural light within the building, so it was a natural choice to recommend the Dulux Trade Light & Space colour range.” The first of its kind, the Dulux

Trade Light & Space colour range absorbs an average of 50 per cent less light, enhancing luminance and making rooms feel bigger, brighter and less gloomy.

moulded No46, Notts ogee, Box and a new half-round profile Classical express, as well as circular, square and rectangular downpipes. The circular downpipes are produced using the latest pipe manufacturing technology, centrifugally spinning the pipe, ensur- ing consistent section dimensions throughout. Saint-Gobain PAM UK also has the capability to provide replica castings made from existing iron fittings, and the ability to modify angle fittings to suit particular needs. Due to the nature and variety of specials, each casting is quoted on a job basis. Offering 18,000 square metres of

BOLSHOI’S SUMPTIOUS SET DESIGN INCLUDES THE DANCE FLOOR

After a six year restoration project, rep- orted to have cost a massive £½ billion, Moscow’s iconic Bolshoi Theatre re- opened this autumn with a glittering gala performance attended by President Dmitry Medveded and the Russian elite. The Harlequin dance floor was itself an integral part of the set design for the Bolshoi Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty. The usually plain vinyl dance surface

echoed the sumptious set design with an intricate pattern designed by the Italian designer Ezio Frigerio. Using advanced wide format com-

puter controlled printing techniques, the Bolshoi’s design was digitised for

printing on rolls of specially formatted white Harlequin Cascade™ vinyl. Extensive testing and experimenta-

tion during the development of the tech- nique ensured the surface characteristics were maintained while ensuring ade- quate adhesion of the inks to withstand scuffing from ballet shoes. Harlequin is pleased to announce that this capability is now offered as a custom option for purchasers of their floors. Harlequin Cascade™ is popular with

stage managers as a heavy-duty stage floor withstanding general stage use, tolerant of heavy props and ideal for dance.

RECTICEL HELPS WITH NEW COMMUNITY CENTRE PROJECT

Recticel Insulation Products has donated over £7,000 of its Eurothane GP insulation board to a major com- munity refurbishment project organ- ised by an award-winning architect. The board has been provided to help transform a derelict building into a new multi-purpose Community Centre in Dunoon, Scotland. The building was previously used as a

Town Hall, but had fallen into disuse. A project was then launched by the John McAslan Family Trust to refurbish the building and create a new resource for the local community. Led by archi- tect John McAslan – who received the

accolade of World Architect of the Year in 2009 – the Trust provides assistance to a wide variety of community-based projects around the world. The high-performance Recticel

Eurothane GP board provided for the refurbishment is ideal for this type of project, as Recticel’s Paul Simpson explains: “This is a multi-purpose board, which has a foam core, faced on both sides with a multi-layer, coated aluminum foil. This makes it well suited to the many different types of pitched roofing, flooring and framed wall applications that are often found on this type of project.”
