from the John Baulch
I
am proud to welcome you to the launch edition of Toy World. Having spent the past thirty years working in the toy trade press, I decided that the time was right to branch
out and launch my own toy magazine. After many hours of hard work, careful planning, the occasional sleepless night and plenty of fun along the way, here is the result. We hope you like it. Here at Toy World we are committed to
delivering a fresh and exciting magazine which has something for everyone connected with the toy trade. From an early stage we adopted the strap-line ‘The business magazine with a passion for toys.’ I have always believed that the best trade magazines are put together by people with a genuine love of their subject matter (and a little industry knowledge and experience comes in handy as well). After three decades in the trade, I can honestly say that toys are in my blood, and I look forward to continuing my long association with the industry through Toy World. I am delighted to be joined by colleagues who are as passionate about toys as I am. Toy World Editor Lewis Eckett has a fi ne pedigree as a b2b journalist, and his unbridled enthusiasm for a LEGO window display in Nuremberg convinced me that he was the right man for the job. He is joined by design wizard and all-round ‘techie’ Graeme
Thomas, and we hope there will be news of additional appointments shortly. In addition, we have also lined-up an unrivalled panel of contributors; all experts in their respective fi elds, and all happy to put their face and name to their opinions (no hiding behind the cloak of anonymity for us, thank you very much). Each month we’ll be bringing you the most
topical and interesting developments from the world of toys, and giving you our take on what it all means. And we’re aiming to shake things up a bit in the process. We’ll be striving to generate as much original content as we can – copy you won’t fi nd anywhere else. Looking back isn’t our style either; we aim to be the industry’s journal of record for the next thirty years, not the last thirty. So what can we promise you? The
latest news, opinion, analysis, exclusive interviews with people that matter and – most importantly – a host of fantastic new toys. If you’ve missed a good monthly gossip column, turn straight to the back of the issue, where you’ll fi nd ‘Allegedly’, the industry’s new source of rumour, innuendo and all manner of inside information. There will also be signifi cant coverage of the Licensing sector every month; when we surveyed UK toy retailers and suppliers, you told us that this was how you wanted to keep up-to-date with licensing information. So we’re more than happy to oblige. In addition to our monthly printed issue, you can follow Toy World online, where we’ll be breaking the latest news stories via our
publisher
daily newsfl ash service (sign up at www.
toyworldmag.co.uk). You’ll also fi nd us on Twitter, Linked-In and Facebook (details on the Contents page). In short, however you choose to keep up to date with all that is happening in the world of toys, Toy World has it covered. We’ve spent the past couple of months honing the database to a state of fi nely- tuned perfection. Well, almost; we are only human, so if you need to correct any of the details we hold, please contact us by visiting the website and hitting the ‘subscribe’ button. Alternatively, you can email us
(
anita@toyworldmag.co.uk), or fi ll in either the form on page 113 or the mailing cover sheet. And the same applies if you’re reading someone else’s copy of Toy World and would like your own next month. It’s free to qualifi ed readers, so if you have an abiding interest in the toy trade, make sure you are signed up. Finally, I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the companies which have offered their support to our new venture, and particularly those which have advertised in this edition. You have allowed us to get Toy World off the ground in some style, and we are very grateful. Your support will not be forgotten. All that remains for me to say is that I hope you enjoy the launch issue of Toy World, and we’ll be back next month with another packed edition, which will include – amongst other things – our guide to the forthcoming Brand Licensing Show.
