Golden Bear
As the Olympic clock counts down to 2012 the race for retail and consumer attention is on for toy companies with offi cial licensed merchandise. With Golden Bear, unveiling Team GB’s offi cial mascot, Pride the Lion, marketing director Christine Nichols gives Toyworld an insight into its latest launch
Tell us about the new Team GB range? It refl ects Great Britain’s national pride and competitive spirit and Pride the Lion will be an extra lucky charm for all our competing athletes in his capacity as offi cial mascot of Team GB. Pride was inspired by Team GB and he is designed to brings the Team’s iconic logo to life with a range of soft toys in various sizes. The core colour is white but is also available in red and blue. Pens, fi gurines, charms and key rings are also available and will be in major retailers from September.
Are you pleased with sales of the 2012 range so far? Sales for the London 2012 ranges have been very positive and we are preparing for the inevitable upsurge as the Games approach. The offi cial mascots of the Games, Wenlock and Mandeville, have already proven to be best-sellers with the limited-edition launch versions selling out and we expect to see a similar level of success for Pride and the rest of the range. The recent events surrounding One Year To Go boosted media and consumer attention and grew awareness around the mascots, creating an increased sense of excitement about the Games.
How can toy retailers make the most of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic merchandise opportunity? We know from research conducted on previous Games that the sales ramp up hugely from prior to the Torch Relay and the demand booms through to the end of Games . Retailers need to order sooner rather than later because it is a case of ‘fi rst come fi rst served’. Demand is already very high and the factories are working at 100% capacity. W:
