“The original leaves from books issued by the six presses give collectors the feel of the actual pages they printed. They show the essential characteristics of the work of each press in terms of type design, format, quality of inking and impression, use of colour, the proportions of the margins and the properties of the hand-made paper. Many leaves also include decorative elements such as initials and paragraph marks or, in some cases, wood-engraved illustrations and borders... The specimen leaves in Pages from Presses are accompanied by an analysis of the characteristics of each of the proprietary types, and the broadside opposite the title-page illustrates many of these. The choice of leaves for inclusion was dictated partly by availability, but they are representative examples of the work of each Press... It is now more than a century since the six presses began work and recent studies presenting modern accounts of each of them have been published. This book ... [draws on these to provide] a concise factual account of each of the presses and their output....Books for which specimen leaves are included have a commentary summarising their background and salient features. “
