81 81. ERAGNY PRESS. GAUTIER, Judith. Album de Poèmes tirés du Livre de Jade. The Eragny Press. 1911. £6,500

8vo., original dark blue lambskin, bound in the Japanese manner, upper cover with title and ornament blocked in gold. Printed in red, grey with 7 illustrations printed in gold and colour and 12 coloured ornaments designed by Lucien Pissarro and engraved on the wood by Esther and Lucien Pissarro. Just a little spotting to boards, otherwise a very good copy.

Limited edition No. 67 of 130 copies. “One of the books, which gave me particular pleasure to produce [...]. For this little book I again used gold leaf; this time for the illustrations as well as the initial letters but, on this occasion, I tried Japanese vellum which, as it could be used dry, enabled me to avoid the tiresome tendency of the gold to stick to the Wet Paper” (L. Pissarro).

Colin Franklin, in his The Private Presseswrote of the Livre de Jade “elaborate but still quite modest the gold printing is used here with elegant success. Gold initials give balance to the illustrations opposite; flower decorations, printed orange and green, end each poem. This is perhaps the climax of Eragny printing, because its elaboration came so clearly from the printer’s taste. It is of its time, and ends a period attractively.”

With original loose order form for this book loosely inserted. Also with 2 printed woodcut Christmas cards from Esther, Orovida and Lucien Pissarro for the years 1928 and 1936.
