Mounted ready for framing, size in mount 500 x 398mm.; a few soft creases, but in very good state. Number 6 of 25 proofs, signed “Eric G” in pencil. The second state, which appeared as Plate 92 in Engravings of Eric Gill (Douglas Cleverdon, 1929). Physick 400.
105. GILL, Eric. Lady C. An original erotic wood engraving of Lady Chatterley and Mellors. 1931. £1,995 Mounted, sheet size 133 X 193mm, image size 90 x 148mm. Small chips on top corners (under mount) else a fine crisp impression on Japanese tissue.
First state of this erotic engraving, signed in the plate “CC/EG”. The engraving was intended for an edition of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, but it was never published. Gill engraved a second state of this image adding foliage and highlighting the figures. Scarce. Physick notes that Gill’s personal files contained neither an impression nor a record sheet of this engraving.
