With an autograph letter signed by Hildelith Cummings on Stanbrook Abbey Press headed paper presenting this copy to Lionel Dakers. The letter discusses the difficulty Cummings had in printing the pamphlet “It was a demon to print on that rough paper with those thin lines. The colour comes out fine in this copy but the white line got lost. I am pleased with the medallia effect which the heavy impression on damp paper produced.”. Hildelith goes on to discuss other books being printed at the press.
Dame Hildelith Cummings was head printer for Stanbrook Abbey from 1956 until her death in 1991. She is considered responsible for earning the Stanbrook Abbey Press a sterling reputation as an excellent private press. By 1952 the Abbey’s Press, the oldest private press in England, was in decline. In 1955 Cumming became the head printer. Under her leadership the Press flourished. She sought the assistance and advice of others such as Sir Sydney Cockerell, John Dreyfus, and typographer Jan van Krimpen. She also hired Margaret Adams, a laywoman who happened to be a talented calligrapher and gilder.
Lionel Dakers, organist and choirmaster was the Director of the Royal School of Church Music from 1972-1989. He wa also a keen book collector; his private press books and considerable T.E. Lawrence collection were sold through Christie’s.

This is the second block that Stone had engraved for Hillier’s bookplate. Hillier had rejected the first, simpler, design because it lacked Stone’s signature flourishes.
