Printed in black and red on grey laid paper with a woodcut engraving by Mark Severin from the Homeric Hymn. The woodcuts by Severin were the first time his work had been published in an English book.


The size of the prospectus shows it to be part of the first printing of 2700 copies (10” by 6 1/4”) as detailed in Cock-a-Hoop (P177).

Original full orange morocco, large gilt design based on the title-page engraving on both covers, spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; 20 engravings in wood and scraper board by Dorothea Braby, title-page printed in black and orange; small bookplate on front paste-down, a very nice copy, preserved in a cloth-covered slipcase.


Limited to 550 numbered copies, this being one of 75 specially bound copies, signed by Dorothea Braby and the translators.


“Never can an illustrator have taken more trouble to achieve a perfect interpretation of the great literature of a nation in the terms of its own art” (Cockalorum 176).
