14. ASHENDENE PRESS. THUCYDIDES. [History of the Peloponnesian War]. Translated into English by Benjamin Jowett. Printed at the Ashendene Press, Shelley House, Chelsea. 1930. £3,750
Folio. Original cream pigskin by W.H. Smith & Son, spine lettered in gilt and with raised bands, edges untrimmed; pp. [ii] + 363 + [1]; printed in red and black in Ptolemy type, including shoulder notes in red Blado italic; a very nice copy.
280 copies were printed, including 20 on vellum. “The most successful [Ashendene] folio is Jowett’s Thucydides, less tall than the others, handsome and sound to handle, lecterns not needed. Ptolemy type is light to read and carries one happily over the pages. Shoulder notes in red are a feature of this work, beautifully arranged and printed. Graily Hewitt’s lines of drawn lettering recall the opening of Genesis in the Doves Bible ... The title page is flawless, much of it in quiet text capitals with no second colour.” (Colin Franklin, The Private Presses, p.58).
15. ASHENDENE PRESS. A Descriptive Bibliography of the Books printed at the Ashendene Press.1894-1935. Ashendene Press.1935.
£1,850
Folio, original maroon polished calf by W.H. Smith, lettered on the spine and with the Ashendene Press device in gilt on the front cover, top edge gilt, in original slipcase covered with Cockerell marbled paper. Illustrated with many sample leaves and including the famous engraving by Ashwin Maynard of Hornby at his press, printed in red and black. Spine and lower board a little sunned, a little light rubbing to boards with a inch long thin groove on lower board, small ink number on lower paste-down, otherwise a very good copy.
First edition, one of 390 numbered copies, signed by Hornby (this no.283). With both errata leaves. The Bibliography is the last book from the Press and one of the most magnificent. The books are not only given full descriptions and accounts of their printing, but in most cases are also illustrated with specimen leaves from the original printings or pages entirely reset and reprinted for the occasion by Hornby.
Also with loosely inserted the Farewell Notice to the Subscribers of the Ashendene Press, the 4 page prospectus for the Bibliography.
16.ASHENDENE PRESS. A Chronological List, with prices, of the Forty Books Printed at the Ashendene Press MDCCCXCV - MCMXXXV. The Ashendene Press. 1935.
£350
Folio, original blue printed wrappers. Printed in red and black. A few light marks on upper wrapper otherwise a near fine copy.
Printed for private circulation. With a printed note signed by C.H St John Hornby on Shelley House headed paper explaining the list. “Dear Sir, Before closing down my Press I printed a List of my books with prices and dates of publication, similar to the List which appeared at the end of my Bibliography. I am sending you a copy of this list, which is not for sale, as I think you may like to have it for reference purposes”. Hornby has also made one manuscript correction within the List.
17. ASHENDENE PRESS. HORACE. Camina Sapphica. Boston. Anne & David Bromer. 1983.
£275
Miniature book 36 x 26mm , in full brown morocco with gilt-stamping by David Bourbeau, in the same style as the 1923 first edition printed by the Ashendene Press. Housed with the prospectus in a small octavo-sized, morocco-backed clamshell box. A fine copy.
Second edition. One of 150 copies. This famous miniature book of Horace’s songs was first printed at the Ashendene Press in 1923 on a commission from Queen Mary for the library of her magnificent Doll’s House. Of that first printing, only a handful of copies survive today, making it a book of the utmost rarity. This second edition was printed by Linnea Gentry with the original plates of the 1923 edition on the handpress used at Ashendene. With a new introduction by Michael Hornby, son of Ashendene founder Charles Henry St. John Hornby. Considered one of the important miniature publications of the last century.
