Limited edition of 100 numbered copies. A choicely printed version of the “Te Deum” in an attractive hand painted binding.


Ernst Engel was one of the leading lights in the fine printing school that emerged in Offenbach am Main. Rodenberg, Nachtrag 1925-1930 p.21

Royal 8vo. 2 vols.; bound by Root in half russet morocco, spines with raised bands and decorated with gilt panels and flower tools, marbled board sides and endpapers, top edges gilt; illustrated with 123 engravings by and after Eisen, Lancret, Boucher, Pater, etc.; a little minor spotting and offsetting, but a very nice copy, preserved in a cloth-covered slipcase.


“Of this edition of La Fontaine’s Tales only a limited number will be printed [actual number not stated], and the Society undertake that it shall never be reprinted. To make that certain, directly after printing a number of the plates will be destroyed and others distributed among the subscribers.” (printed note at the front of Vol. 1).

Second edition with nine additional poems to the first edition of 1968, six of which were unpublished elsewhere. One of 100 copies signed by Pinter. This copy (No. 3) additionally inscribed by Pinter on the title-page “Ned Erbe best wishes Harold Pinter”. Ned Erbe was director of publicity for New Directions in the 50’s and 60’s.
