throughout by Fritz Kredel; very good indeed.
No. 743 of a limited edition of 1500, signed by Fritz Kredel. Preface and notes by the esteemed anthropologist Ashley Montagu. This edition omits part of chapter 8 and all of chapters 9-16, which deal primarily with the reproduction of lower
animals. In this work Darwin expounded fully his theory of Sexual Selection and discussed at length the link he recognised between human and ape lineage. Freeman also points out that in The Descent “the word evolution occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin’s works...”. This piece further enhanced Darwin’s fame - if not his popularity - and is one of the most significant works in the evolutionary debate.

No. 743 of limited edition of 2000, signed by the photographer. Introduction by Maitland A. Edey, conservationist and editor in chief of Time-Life Books. This was the book that made Carson’s name, a million- seller that has been translated into over thirty languages. It was also made into an Oscar-winning documentary film. Its appeal is easy to see - Carson takes a vast subject and makes it approachable, imbuing her analysis of the origins of life in the ocean, the development of the oceans themselves and the complexity of tides with a poetic vision of the beauty of the sea. She used oceanographic research which had not previously been published, making this as important a scientific achievement as it is a literary work.
