VAR Special data centre report
Power and glory
IT Reseller spoke with a number of leading VARs about some of their most notable recent end-user data centre projects, looking in detail at the specific customer requirements and how they were met.
Comtec project case studies
According to Nick Ewing, sales director and head of Comtec's data centre and infrastructure design team, one of the most notable projects that Comtec has completed over the past 12 months includes a data centre infrastructure installation at leading outsourcing company Eaga. As a major UK supplier of heating and renewable energy the company is also at the forefront of the carbon economy. The company therefore sought a data centre that not only reflected its values but is also focused on delivering the most energy efficient solution to the critical requirement for IT services.
By taking a modern and progressive view of data centre design and build, Eaga now owns and operates a facility in that functions with high utilisation and manageability of space, power and cooling capacities. This, says Ewing, greatly reduces waste, especially wasted energy, and therefore lowers not only the cost of operations but also the carbon impact of delivering IT services.
Modular and scalable power protection
The Eaga data centre features the first UK deployment of an APC Symmetra PX 500, high-performance, 3-phase UPS, which combines modular and scalable power protection with a high level of efficiency, capacity and performance. The data centre

solution also uses Hot Aisle Containment Solution with chilled water for high efficiency cooling. Comtec supplied the system complete with data centre central management software, with capacity, change and operations management. Specifically Eaga required a scalable data centre solution with no compromise on efficiency to meet its environmental credentials.
Ewing points out that another key project for Comtec over the past year was at Addison Lee. The company’s branded vehicles are a familiar sight on the streets of London, where the major UK operator of chauffeur driven cars and premium minicabs is on-call round the clock 365 days a year. IT plays a major role in ensuring that each week 192,000 passengers are picked up and dropped off
