Hardware, software

and value-added services ... just the solution

As 2011 gets well underway, Mark Hawkins, product business group director, Wireless & Mobility EMEA at Avnet Technology Solutions, shares his thoughts on the Auto ID marketplace and where he sees developments during the forthcoming year.

Mark Hawkins: “It is a priority for Avnet to ensure that we are doing everything that we can to ensure that our partners are equipped to capitalise on the market opportunity outlined by recent VDC research. “

010 was a milestone year, not just for Avnet but for the wider Auto ID market. We saw a lot of change and consolidation in the industry,

but also a lot of growth. In October 2010, Avnet, Inc. achieved its first US$6 billion quarter, growing organically year on year by 26.4 per cent and also celebrated the rare accolade of 50 years on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Earlier in the year, Avnet Inc. completed its acquisition of Bell Microproducts Inc., the largest acquisition in Avnet’s history on a revenue basis, substantially improving Avnet’s global scale and scope. As a leading value- added distributor of storage and computing technology, Bell Micro had sales of approximately $3.0 billion in

calendar year 2009 of which 41 per cent resulted from sales in EMEA. For our resellers, the acquisition of Bell Micro presents enhanced revenue opportunities in 2011 by offering a widened portfolio of products including storage, computing, software and networking solutions that can be offered to their end user customers. In addition, the merger has increased the number of sales and technical personnel across EMEA to provide pre and post-sales support to our partners.

2011, a year of opportunity

In a recent industry report on enterprise mobility solutions published by VDC, the research group stated that

demonstrating that more and more enterprise applications are becoming mobility enabled. It would seem evident that many of the industry’s key manufacturers have been preparing for this opportunity in recent months, developing and extending their own product portfolios.

“Based in the same building as the warehouse, Avnet is able to save resellers considerable amounts of time and effort by coordinating shipments, charging batteries, pre-loading software and more.”

the global installed base of mobile devices supporting enterprise and government mobility applications is expected to grow globally from just over 60 million units in 2010 to more than 100 million by 2014, clearly

Perhaps the most comprehensive and exciting product portfolio for channel partners to take to market in 2011 is Intermec’s. The expansion of Intermec’s product line started in 2010 when we saw the release and enormous success of the CN50, and when the vendor also introduced its smallest rugged mobile computer to date, the CS40. This trend has continued at a swift pace into 2011, in fact as I write this article, before we’ve even reached the end of the first quarter of the new calendar year, Intermec has launched a brand new range of four ultra-rugged mobile computers that have all been built on a single platform. The 70 Series of mobile computers offers a unique ability to deliver the benefits that come with one computer architecture,

common system software, one set of peripherals and one docking system helping to reduce infrastructure complexity and cost for the end user and providing a clear value proposition for the resellers to take to market.
