Flexible and fully scalable UPS solution for large housing association

PCS Business Systems project case studies

Orbit is a large housing association based in Coventry. Orbit Part of the Orbit Group, which operates predominantly across the Midlands, East Anglia and the South East, the housing association offers a wide range of services and housing options; including general rented needs, supported housing, sheltered and very-sheltered schemes, private retirement, mortgage rescue and low- cost home ownership.

Time constraints

Last year the housing association decided to upgrade its network and server estate. It then required a new backup power UPS in order to complete the task. Sean Prince,

sales supervisor at reseller PCS Business Systems, takes up the story. “Orbit had identified the need for a large UPS. However, due to project time scales not being met by the initial UPS provider of choice, the association called on us to look at other potentially suitable UPS systems. We then recommended Eaton Power Quality. After Eaton personnel visited the housing association it considered that the required

Future proofing

“Orbit then agreed to this suggestion, so the order for the initial UPS was cancelled and the installation of the MX unit went ahead. It was then decided to install an Eaton 60,000 kVA 9390 UPS, plus extra battery, which was

subsequently downgraded to 40,000 kVA. The decision to do this was based on the possibility of Orbit requiring a greater level of power in the future. By installing the larger capacity UPS Orbit knew it could easily raise the capacity back up to 60,000 kVA without having to upgrade all the cabling, etc.”

Smooth operator

Prince explained that Eaton was quick to visit the end user to discuss its specific UPS requirements, and was fully aware that Orbit had a very tight timeframe within to complete the project, due to the original UPS order being placed three months earlier with little to show for it. Prince pointed out that, in addition to a delay in delivering the originally ordered UPS there were also a series of component issues that needed to be resolved. “However, when Eaton took over the project, things ran much more smoothly,” said Prince. The Eaton equipment was sourced from distributor Micro P, while all of the installation work related to the project was undertaken by Eaton. 
