Countdown To The Great Harwood Show - 31st May
The Great Harwood Agricultural Society was formed in 1857. Mr Lawrence Catterall and Mr Lawrence Lee of Martholme were the organisers of the first show and entries for that year included horned cattle, horses, bulls, sheep and pigs. Harwood Brass Band supplied the music and at 5 o'clock a dinner was held at the Cross Axes. Year by year entries increased and new classes were introduced, including dogs and poultry. There were classes for butter, cheese and oatcakes. In 1868 the first prize for a "firkin of old butter" was won by Great Harwood Co-operative Society. Since then the society has been bringing the pleasure and excitement of the countryside to our town with an annual show. This was traditionally held on Whit Monday, which is now Spring Bank Holiday, the last Monday in May. Last year was the first show at The New Showfield and with an absolutely scorching day the show attracted over three times the normal number of visitors. This years show will build on last years success as new attractions are being added including a jousting tournament and sheep dog trials (as per 'One Man and his Dog' ) which will carry points towards the national event. There will be a full day of displays in the main arena with something to suit all the family. The society continues to promote the traditional sights, produce and crafts of Lancashire, particularly from Great Harwood and the surrounding areas, and are now looking to including more of the local community - groups, schools and individuals, and they invite everyone to browse their website to see what they have to offer.
