Early Easter Eggs As well as adopting the pagan festival of Eostre, the Egg, representing fertility and re-birth in pagan times, was also adopted as part of the Christian Easter festival and it came to represent the 'resurrection' or re-birth of Christ after the crucifixion, Some Christians believe it is a symbol of the stone blocking the Sepulchre being 'rolled' away.

Green at Heart for March

By Megan Heaton

This months article has been written by Megan Heaton, a year 7 pupil at Norden High School and Sports College, where she is a member of the school’s ‘Green Team’.

As springtime approaches, we say a happy farewell to a treacherous winter and a warm welcome to spring. In just a few more weeks tiny lambs will start appearing in the fields and trees will be bursting with greenery once more. The sights of spring really are amazing. Bright yellow daffodils and other attractive flowers will begin to grow again; animals will awaken from their long hibernations; and birds can finally scour for food without getting caught in long snowstorms. When I hear the word ’spring’, one word that comes to mind is ‘chain’ because one thing is connected to another–flowers attract insects, which attract birds, which attract larger birds and so on. In spring the life cycle starts again. Many people believe that spring is just another season but to me spring is special. It is special and wonderful because it is the season of rebirth.

Members of the ’Green Team’ have assisted the Rishton PROSPECTS Panel with a number of projects in the village including bulb planting around the library area, at the station and in the ‘turrets’ garden; woodland management and ‘tree hugging’ in Cut Wood Park; oak tree planting also in the park. They have a number of on-going environmental projects in and around the school which can be the subject of a further article in ‘The Local Herald’.
