Now I wouldn’t want to seem insensitive. Perish the thought of course. But I am getting a little tired of Jamie Bulger’s mum, Denise Fergus, shouting from the rooftops about the justice system and calling for the dismissal of certain public figures. Let me nail my colours firmly to the mast. The murder of little Jamie seventeen years ago plumbed the depths of our judicial history. It was horrific. I am sure no parent could ever recover from such a horrendous ordeal. However, the two boys found guilty of this outrage were sentenced under the constraints of our legal system. And both boys served their sentences. Whilst we could argue for eternity about the length of their term, we cannot argue that they were locked up in accordance with current practice. For years the identity and geography of these former child murderers has remained secretive. Until of course very recently when the Ministry of Justice revealed that the former Jon Venables had been returned to prison in breach of his licence having been questioned about a very serious crime. And quite sadly and predictably, as soon as the red-top tabloids get a sniff of the story, we have demands for his identity to be revealed and his new home to be made public to the voracious hacks. Ms Fergus is immediately consulted and is readily complicit in the clamour for more information. Of course they all have short memories. The very reason Thompson and Venables were forced to assume new identities was because the authorities could not risk lynch mobs of white van-driving,
Sun-reading vigilantes executing their own
summary justice. These are the very people who jammed the switchboards of “talk radio” stations back in the nineties urging that two ten year-olds be executed for their crimes. Two ten year-olds. I offer no other comment on this particular debate other than to quote the words of a mother I heard on a recent phone-in. She said “If I was pressed to make a decision, I would rather live in a society where we had child killers than a society in which we killed children.” We live in a nation of uneducated and violent young men. Behind them is a small caucus of intelligent people who will happily use these numpties as storm-troopers to violently carry out acts in the name of
justice. That is the very reason we
cannot reveal the whereabouts of Jamie Bulger’s killers. The very reason we can never have a “Sarah’s Law” in Britain. You don’t agree ? Tell me why a paediatrician was routinely persecuted in this country by people who can’t spell and don’t know the medical term for their kids’ doctor ! There will be thousands of you reading this article who will not agree with my stance. Most of you will have had children. How many of your children could possibly have committed the crimes Venables and Thomsen were convicted of ? I’ll wager none. Because you taught them right from wrong, gave them love, and offered a family base of some description which offered them the security and stability they need. Neither Venables or Thompson had such an upbringing. They were given no moral guidance, no sense of good and bad. And indeed, I am led to believe, one of the two boys had been routinely subjected to actions that may well have been mirrored during that
fateful afternoon Yet throughout this whole

More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can't wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that's not only better, but also more directly involves me.
appalling case, how many people have seen fit to bring parents to book for the actions of their offspring ? In other words we will happily hang ten year-olds for admittedly horrible crimes but conveniently absolve their parents of any judicial culpability. You will recall only last year we came perilously close to a repeat incident in Doncaster. But for the grace of God other children would have cruelly died. Again, a close analysis of the case shows lack of proper parenting and upbringing as pivotal factors in the behaviour of the two boys. I am convinced, sadly, that such cases will become even more common in the years to come. We have unleashed a time-bomb. Many parents are not giving their children any sense of right or wrong. They do not expect any responsibility from their children as they patently accept none themselves. They fail to communicate with children or have any involvement in their education. They allow them to parade the streets until all hours. They teach them a repertoire of offensive language. They allow them to view hours and hours of totally unsuitable films and other media which they are totally unequipped to emotionally dissect. Little Jamie Bulger was killed by Venables and Thompson and it was right they were punished. They knew what they were doing. However what they were doing was not shocking or alien to them. It repeated what they had heard, seen and experienced. Yes you might have strung them up for their crimes. But how many other kids will you execute before you start to address the blame to exactly where it lies ?
You know my thoughts. Virtually anybody can have a child. But it takes skill, effort, and love to bring them up. It is not a right to have a child but something to be earned. And if I had my way, no woman in this country should be allowed to bear one until the parents have clearly and unequivocally proved stability, and responsibility.
