On leaving the Junction 7 Estate, Walkers will be invited to turn LEFT, along Blackburn Road towards Clayton. Once they come to the Leeds – Liverpool canal they will cross it on the road before, by turning left, they will descend to the canal towpath on which they will walk the first part of the route. There will be ample stewards in their distinctive high-visibility jackets to ensure that they take the correct route. Walkers will continue along the towpath, with the canal on their RIGHT until they reach Bridge No. 112 where they will cross over, so that the canal will now be on their LEFT. (Take extra care here – there are some steps to negotiate). Again, stewards will be on hand to guide you. Walkers will follow the well-defined footpath, along the bank of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (which, incidentally is the longest canal in Northern England at 127 miles long. It passes through 91 locks and reaches a summit level of 487 feet.) Soon after reaching Bridge No. 108 (Tottleworth Bridge) walkers will arrive at a disused railway line where, on turning right, they will head in the direction of Great Harwood. Having passed Great Harwood cemetery and The Victoria Public House, a right turn will bring them onto Barons Way and by continuing until they reach The Forts Arms (on their right) and turning RIGHT there – Mercer Park will be on their LEFT – they will continue along the cart
track, through the fields, until
meeting up with Blackburn Road again. Here they turn LEFT and return to Junction 7 Trading Estate.
