“I’ve got an idea for a new business – will it work? Is it easy to set up in business? What’s the difference between a sole trader and a company? How do I get my prototype made into a product that I can take to market? How much should I charge for it? The bank has asked me for a cash-flow forecast – how do I do one? What should I say on my web-site?

I’ve never

employed anyone before – what do I do? How does VAT work? I’ve got to put in a bid for this work – I need help...”. Sound familiar?

Well, if you have ever thought of starting up

on your own, or you already have a business, those are probably questions that you might have faced yourself. Let’s face it, unless you’ve done it before, why should you know the answers? Work over the last year by HyBOSS shows Hyndburn is awash with people who have ideas for a new business, but many of them don’t move forward because they can’t find the right sort of help. That’s not to say that help isn’t there – sometimes it’s just so ‘formal’, or complicated that people are put off.

HyBOSS is a group of people in Hyndburn who are changing that - accountants, bank managers, business people, lawyers, people with marketing and IT skills, people who know about charities,

the Council, property and much more, who are all

willing to give their time, knowledge and experience – not to mention help from their contacts and networks – to Hyndburn people who want to think about setting up, or who are running a business,

charity, social enterprise or even community

project. It’s been running for about a year now, and has deliberately kept a ‘low profile’ so far, because it wanted to have evidence that it’s idea works before it started making more people aware. Yes, other organisations work in this area, and Hyndburn Enterprise Trust is an excellent example - but HyBOSS ‘does it differently’. It’s a bottom-up approach – there’s nothing formal, but it’s professional; there are no pressures or time constraints, other than your own; they’ll meet where you want to meet, when it’s convenient for you. And in the best possible way, they’ll challenge you – make sure that you are thinking things through properly; guide you to evaluate the options you have; help you get to a position where you can make decisions... And it does work, as over 60 people or businesses in Hyndburn will

tell you - local cafes, a recruitment business, sports

coaches, artists, electrical businesses, an engineering firm, a ‘green’ business, a photographer... And the best part? HyBOSS is a free service that’s completely confidential, and you can use it as much or as little as you want! Why? Because HyBOSS’s people just want Hyndburn to be a better place – sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t. You can find out more by looking at www.hyboss.co.uk, or call Andy Hunter on 07736 486707.
