World Book Week
During World Book Week, the children visited a tent set up in the hall as Horrid Henry’s Purple Hand Gang’s fort. Here they listened to several stories and speculated about the coming Horrid Henry series for the BBC.
On the actual World Book Day the children were entertained by Sean Connolly who is the voice of Horrid Henry for the BBC. He read each year group a story about the character and then helped with some follow up activities.
The Year 1 children were keen to learn about Sean’s work and asked some interesting questions to discover what a voice artist actually does. The Year 2 children designed a book cover and discussed their favourite titles. Sean read an appropriate story of what happened on Horrid Henry’s World Book Day and signed their books as a momento of the day.
The children also dressed up as a character from the Horrid Henry books and took home a World Book Day book voucher to exchange for a book.
Reception Art Week
Reception went to the Barber Institute. The focus of the trip was sculpture.
Ash End Farm
The Kindergarten and Foundation pupils visited Ash End Farm on Friday 5th December to see and handle lots of baby animals, the favourites of which seemed to be the chickens!
However cute as they were, they were not the star of the show – that honour fell to Father Christmas who happily had decided to visit the Farm on the same day! How lucky was that?
They looked at different sculptures in the gallery and learnt about the techniques used to make them, i.e. casting and carving. The children did some observational drawings of head sculptures with pencil. They learnt how to join pieces of clay together by cross-hatching the two pieces with a clay tool, rubbing water onto both surfaces and smoothing the joins with their fingers. They created their own head sculptures using this technique.
In school, throughout the year, the children have been involved in a variety of activities. Our theme this year has been the storybook called ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Here is a list of some of the activities the children have participated in:
• decorated biscuits to look like the Gruffalo
People Who Help Us
The Kindergarten children were fortunate enough to have a visit from the West Midlands Police.
In line with the theme ‘People Who Help Us’ Sue Rollason’s husband Sgt. John Rollason, WPCs Lucy Weston, Stephanie Westwood, and Asim Abbai, all from Bournville Lane Police Station, arrived in full uniform with lots of spare jackets and hats for the children to try on.
It was questionable which was the highlight of the day – the dogs, Leo and Rafferty with their handler Simon Horton, or being allowed to climb into the traffic car and turn on the lights and the sirens.
Our neighbours must have been very worried when they heard all the noise – perhaps they sent for the police!
