Earth Sculpture
The Earth Sculpture was designed and made by the current Year 2 pupils, alongside our regular artist-in-resident Lizzy Bean.
To create the design the children drew individual designs on paper and then experimented making model sculptures in trays of sand, working collaboratively with their peers. Once the final design had been chosen the children had the back-breaking task of filling sandbags. The full bags were used as the foundation of the sculpture. Wooden sticks were hammered into the bags to secure them. Next came the messy process of making cob to cover the sandbags. The children had to wear wellies and old clothes to mix mud and straw together to make the cob, which was applied by hand to the sculpture.
Grass seed was then added to the wet mixture. Then came the waiting game to let the turf settle and the grass grow.
On Friday 1st May, Lizzy Bean visited the children again to unveil the sculpture. The children were pleased with the end product and they will now be able to use this when out in the garden. They will be able to sit on it when reading stories, or climb on it and use it for whatever activities their imaginations come up with!
The Pre-Prep Garden
The Pre-Prep garden is in full flower. Set up last summer by Mrs Still with the help of the children, the garden was planted using plants brought in by the children – and a kind donation helped pay for the benches. A picket fence surrounds the garden, enclosing the pond and flower beds.
The garden has matured well over the last year. It is maintained by the children in the gardening club, who are able to sit and look at the pond and admire the display of flowers at playtime.
Aerobatic Displays by Birds of Prey
Year 1 were lucky enough to watch the Falconry Centre Display Team at work on Thursday 7th May.
The Display Team brought along a varied selection of owls and other raptors. They talked to the children about birds of prey, their diet, habitat and conservation in the wild, before showing them how wonderful the birds looked in flight.
If you go down to the woods today..! Play Time
Children in the Kindergarten are loving their new Timberline play equipment and are becoming little budding gardeners watering and caring for their garden.
13 The Hallfieldian
Pupils in Reception set a date in their diaries and invited their teddies to a picnic. As grown-ups know, it’s an extremely difficult task thinking about food and menus – so much choice, so many yummy biscuits and cakes to choose from. And what one teddy likes may not be the same as another teddy. They were helped in their culinary efforts in terms of food preparation and hygiene by their teachers, but in terms of eating it was teddies to the rescue!
