Malvern St James
On Saturday 21st March 2009, after making a few wrong turns and arguing with the Sat Nav, Mrs Shackleton and Mrs Culek arrived, on a beautiful sunny morning in the foothills of the Malverns, to Malvern St. James for the Junior Schools Art Competition.
On arriving they were greeted by some of our excited pupils and their parents before going around the exhibition. We soon discovered that we had some Hallfield winners and some highly commended work, a very proud achievement!
Well done to all the pupils whose work was entered.

This is a new initiative whereby several Year 5 children run a Friday lunchtime Science Club for Year 2 pupils. The Parents’ Association funded the purchase of 30 stand-alone experiments, complete with instructions and resources for the children to carry out.
The activities included watching how white Magic Beads change colour in the sunlight, writing secret messages using coloured ink dots and filters and learning about surface tension and why things sink – or not!
Shunning modern technology and the latest iPhones they returned to the days of Enid Blyton, making telephones with cups and strings that even worked round corners! Sounds more like Harry Potter than Hallfield!
The children loved the experience – both our budding scientists in Year 2 and our Year 5 ‘teachers’ who maybe have realised it’s not as easy as it looks!
• Year 6 – Hannah Macarthur • Year 6 – Kimi Shah
Chamber Choir trip to Stowe Year 6 visit to Ironbridge
On Friday 8th May, the Year 6 children visited the ‘Enginuity’ exhibition at The Ironbridge Museum. The exhibition is designed to switch on imaginations in the interactive Design and Technology Centre and discover how good ideas can be turned into great products.
The children saw how, with a little ingenuity, it is possible to pull a 10-ton locomotive or generate electricity from flowing water. They were able to look at familiar objects with new eyes using giant X-ray machines, build an earthquake proof tower and challenge the robotic arm.
Children could watch amazing interactive shows and sketch out their own bright ideas in the Design Zone.
Finally, having been delayed back in February due to the snowfall, our Chamber Choir embarked on the annual trip to the Prep Schools’ Choral Day at Stowe School on a bright, sunny Tuesday in May.
On arrival, children made their way to the chapel to start rehearsals on music which we had prepared at the start of the year. Hallfield joined with pupils from 12 other schools from across the country and also with the choir of Stowe.
They were accompanied by a brass octet which raised the roof in Parry’s stirring anthem ‘I Was Glad’. The children also experienced singing in plainchant during the Precis of the Evensong service. The tricky Psalm 150 setting by John Rutter, with its constantly changing rhythms was soon overcome with the helpful guidance of Simon Dearsley, the Director of Music at Stowe. Yet again, the day was a highlight of the musical calendar and well done to all involved, as well as a big thank you to parents who attended the service at the end of the day.
Harvest Festival Service at St. George’s Church
Once again the sun shone on a lovely autumnal day as Years 1 to 6 walked to St. George’s Church for the annual Harvest Service.
The choir sang beautifully – particularly the favourite John Rutter piece ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ – and the readers are to be congratulated for their clear, well delivered readings and prayers. The ushers appeared smart and engaging. The Rev. Simon Thorburn gave an interesting talk about how disaster in the form of the boll weevil bug changed the fortunes of the people of Alabama, by forcing them to replace their crops of cotton with peanuts – a far more lucrative cash crop. Which just goes to prove that it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good!
