Spring Greetings

Mrs Culek:

Mrs Culek was appointed Head of Art on a permanent basis, having stood in at short notice following the very sad death of Mrs Megan Webster.

Having gained a degree in Graphic Design she trained as a primary school teacher and has taught in a number of schools over the past 15 years. More recently she has been Art Co-ordinator in two schools and exhibits her own work at local exhibitions.

Miss Emma Bandy and Miss Hayley O’Hara:

Miss Emma Bandy joined the Kindergarten as a Nursery Assistant and Miss Hayley O’Hara was appointed as a Teaching Assistant in Reception.

Mr Richard Batchelor:

Mr Richard Batchelor joined us as Director of Studies – responsible for all curriculum matters from Years 1 to 6. He is a Geography graduate and was Head of Geography at St Alban’s School (an independent school for 11-18 year olds) for 14 years before becoming Director of Studies and Deputy Head at Hereford Cathedral School in 2001. He is an ISI Inspector and an international mountain leader. He has led the Duke of Edinburgh scheme in senior schools and is qualified to lead Outward Bound pursuits.

Spring Farewells

Mrs Jenny Cartwright:

Mrs Jenny Cartwright left after 18 years of loyal service, to become Catering Manager at Edgbaston High School. She came to Hallfield in 1991, having worked previously at the Blue Coat School in Harborne.

Mrs Sarah Rafiq:

Mrs Sarah Rafiq has taught in a number of primary schools both in England and abroad – most recently in Wheelers Lane Primary School, Kings Heath and the International school in Jakarta. She replaces Mrs Bowler in the Year 3 team.

Mr Tim Watson:

Mr Tim Watson joined us as an additional games coach for four afternoons a week. He is a talented games player who is able to offer football, cricket, and rugby to a high standard. He has played for Moseley RFC and played representative rugby at Midlands’ level.

Miss Geraldine Thompson:

Miss Geraldine Thompson arrived to cover a considerable amount of supply work, including some for Mrs Miles who was on maternity leave, during the Autumn and Spring terms. We are looking forward to her taking up a full-time position of teacher of English and Head of RE.

Edward John Miles:

Sarah Miles, Head of English, gave birth to a little boy on the 26th March, weighing in at 7lbs 9ozs.

Our congratulations to all the family.

Bartholomew Wilkinson: Bartholomew, known as Tolly, was born on the 25th August. Weighing in at 9lbs 10ozs, he is a very welcome brother for Audrey.

Mr Wilkinson and his wife are both teachers – and teachers find choosing names for their babies very difficult! They chose Bartholomew because neither of them had ever taught a Bartholomew and because it was Mr Wilkinson’s grandfather’s name. Incidentally it is also the original name of Edgbaston Old Church – and the stone for the Parish boundary is set in the wall on the walk down to the Pre-Prep!

Mr Matthew Puzey:

We welcomed Mr Matthew Puzey as acting Head of English for two terms during Mrs Miles’ maternity leave. He is an English graduate who has taught for several years at King Edward VI School, Camp Hill Boys’ – and more recently second in the English Department at Bishop Challinor School, Kings Heath.

Summer Greetings

Summer Farewells

In the second half of the academic year there were a considerable number of consultations with some members of staff, with regards to the restructuring of the team of support staff within the School. As a result we parted company with the Matrons, Mrs Joanne Norton and Mrs Sue McLellan and the Pre-Prep Secretary Mrs Sarah Guthrie.

Between them the Matrons gave over 50 years of service, Mrs Norton starting out in 1972 as a Boarding House Matron in Beech Lawn. We thank them for their loyalty and hard work over the years.

Miss Marcia Tang:

Miss Marcia Tang left us to return to the maintained sector, taking up a new post at Conway Primary School, Sparkbrook.

Mrs Dorine Le Saint:

Mrs Dorine Le Saint left to concentrate on her degree in Politics and Economics and hopefully to start a PGCE.

Mrs Karen Stokes:

Mrs Karen Stokes left to work at Priory School as a part-time Special Needs Assistant.

Miss Mel Lynskey:

Miss Mel Lynskey, having spent two years at Hallfield and five years in total in Great Britain, decided that it was time to return to her family and friends in Taranaki, North Island New Zealand.
