Lights Cameras Action!

CBeebies came to Hallfield School on Wednesday 14th January to film for a brand new series called ‘Show Me Show Me’. The Kindergarten and Foundation children were delighted to be chosen to appear in the new show.

The film crew turned up early to set up. They brought cameras and microphones as well as different sets and lighting, and, of course, the clapper board!

The presenter talked to the children before the shoot about various subjects – snakes, birthdays, favourite toys and holidays. They then went into the ‘studio’, set up in the library, one by one to be filmed with the presenters and talk about their subjects for the programme. The children were very excited to be on the television and were fascinated by the equipment.

Book Worms

There can be fewer things better than reading except, perhaps, earning money for doing it! This year was the Silver Jubilee of Readathon, an event run by The Roald Dahl Foundation and the Sargent Cancer Care for Children, that encourages children to read as many books as they can in five days and raise money by asking friends and relatives to sponsor them. The children are free to choose their own books and decide how many they thought they could read in the allotted time.

Five days of peace and quiet ensued as pages were turned, paragraphs perused and chapters absorbed until the final total of £1,461.60 had been raised and lots of children had had their imaginations fired by words and images.

Reading was very much on the agenda during the Book Fair, another event organized by Mrs Miles. Children and their parents bought books to the value of £1,566 from which the School received 60 pence in every pound to be spent on books for the Library and book prizes throughout the year.

In these days of computer games and DVDs it is comforting to see the pupils of Hallfield still like a good read!

Thank you to Mrs. Miles and to all children and parents who used this opportunity to purchase books for their children.

Operation Christmas Child Santa in a Shoe Box

In these times of long lead-ins, of Christmas carols being piped over the airways of the supermarkets as soon as the last rocket has been fired on bonfire night, and shelves groaning with presents and food, it is a most salutary experience taking part in this event and realizing that for some children in the world’s poorest regions, this shoe box represents their entire Christmas.

Year 3 pupils collected the boxes and wrapped them in Christmas paper before filling them with gifts – crayons, dolls, toy cars and pencils. Some boxes contained really useful things like woolly hats, gloves and scarves, and things we take so for granted like soap, toothpaste and a tooth brush! The completed boxes were labelled and sealed, before being collected by the Samaritans to be distributed to countries across the globe.

The children enjoyed filling the boxes and it did make them realize how lucky we are living in a country that isn’t torn apart by war, famine and drought.
