‘Kidney Kids Appeal’

On Friday 13th February, the children of Hallfield helped to raise an impressive £237.00 for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The money raised went towards the ‘Kidney Kids Appeal’ to help children with renal problems.

They raised the money by making a donation to wear their own clothes – the theme was blue, to tie in with the ‘Kidney Kids’ logo. There were some amazing outfits with trendy tights, truly terrible ties and hair-raising hats – teamed with some funky accessories! There was a competition during a break-time disco and prizes were awarded for the best most innovative costumes.

First prize went to Mia Brocklehurst-Cordell, second prize went to Karam Sandhu and third prize was won by Devan Patel.

Children were also asked to donate their unwanted or broken mobile phones. There was good support for this and our contribution was sent to Radio WM to raise money for the appeal.

Christian Aid Week

The theme of the Upper School assembly on Thursday 14th April was Christian Aid Week.

Maggie Cull and Helen Dodds came in to school to talk to the children about the charity and what its aims were.

During the week beginning Monday 10th May the charity collected donations to help orphaned children in Africa.

Helen Dodds told the children “By 2010, a third of Africa’s children will be orphans. Christian Aid’s partners work alongside the most vulnerable families – week in, week out – bringing hope in desperate situations. They need everyone’s support all year round, not just Christian Aid Week”.

The children listened carefully to the talk and learnt a lot about children who are much less well off than themselves.

Comic Relief

The run-up to the day was almost as exciting as the day itself. Children sold red noses at break times, and tickets were also sold for the Big Breakfast. Music and laughter drifted out from behind closed doors around the School as pupils practiced for the afternoon talent show, and staff could be heard singing Abba songs in rehearsal for a tribute show on the big day.

A tantalizing aroma of bacon and eggs filled the air around the car park as Accent Catering laid on a special Comic Relief breakfast, but those who missed it made up for it at break time at the cake stall run by children and stocked by mums!

EcoArt Cards

Upper School had a wonderful time banishing the blues and cold weather, by experiencing and thinking about beautiful sunsets in the Art Room. EcoArt Cards, a charitable company, gave children the inspiration to create images based on the theme of sunsets and landscapes in order to create their own professional greetings card.

They produced their cards using their own artwork. They did a self portrait and this appeared on the back of the card with their picture title and their name.

All of the products that EcoArt card uses – envelopes, and even the cellophane wrappers – are recycled, FSC graded and or bio-degradable.

The EcoArt card is a charity raising money for Watoto. 10% of all the money raised goes to orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa, whose lives have been ravaged by war and disease.

Costumes and wigs resplendent, the children sat in the Upper School hall and were entertained by their friends singing and dancing, telling funny jokes (and not so funny jokes). Mr Tobin, Mrs Villiers Cundy, Mr Walker and Mr Alexander performed their very own tribute to Abba dressed in suitably glitzy and non-fire retardant clothing, accompanied by the audience singing that favourite Abba number ‘Dancing Queen’. Who needs Meryl Streep and Julie Walters?

Children in Pre-Prep also contributed in a special Comic Relief assembly. There was lots of laugher as children from each class told jokes to all the Pre-Prep, with the winners being awarded prizes.

A grand total of £440 was raised for Comic Relief.
