Year 3 Odyssey Puppet Show

Children in Year 3 were entertained by Cornelius & Jones Original Productions who performed ‘The Oydssey’ Puppet Show on Tuesday 12th May in the Upper School Hall.

The show re-tells Homer’s classic tale about Odysseus setting sail for home, following his victory at Troy. On his journey he encounters a one-eyed giant, the beautiful Sirens, a six headed monster, the wicked enchantress Circe and a world of nymphs and gods.

Puppets and masks, mythological creatures and an ingenious set were all brought to life in this enchanting story.

Afterwards the children were shown how to make and perform with shadow puppets. Using storytelling and music and song, they all worked towards creating a magical workshop performance that they performed at the end of the day!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Pupils in Year 4 were captivated watching their classmates transformed into characters from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, when actors from the Young Shakespeare Company came to do a workshop in February.

With the help of a narrator, and with the professional actors taking the main parts, the pupils joined the cast as minor characters in an exciting energy-filled performance that not only brought lots of laughter but a better understanding of Shakespeare’s work.

Elocution

Poetry

Poems were learnt during the last half term and heats were held before the elocution finals on Wednesday 4th March. Miss Marie Williams had the difficult job of judging the Foundation and Year 1 finalists, and Miss Geraldine Thompson the Year 2 and Reception finalists.

A range of poems were delivered with confidence and expression from the stage in the Upper School Hall, to an audience of proud parents. The results were announced at the end of each year group, with a first and many second prizes awarded to each form. An overall cup winner was chosen from Year 2 and this went to Aroun Kalyana.

The children all worked extremely hard to learn their poems and recited them without any sign of fear. Our two adjudicators found it difficult to choose a first and second prize among the high standard presented to them.

Speech and Drama

The elocution competition took place on Tuesday 20th January and was well attended by parents and staff. The Performances were polished and the two competitions were very close.

Winners

• Year 3 & 4 – Mudd Cup Amar Dosanjh

• Year 5 & 6 – William Atkins Cup Ciara Regan

Thank you to Mrs. Sally Gray for being this year’s adjudicator.

National Schools’ Handwriting Competition 2009

For the first time, two 3-year old children took part in the National Schools’ Handwriting Competition. The children did not fall into even the youngest category, but still shocked the judge with their entries.

Patricia Lovett gave a special mention to Georgie- Lee Rowledge and Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay, who took part in the competition to show their best handwriting. The children were praised for their ability to hold a pencil, form letters and even for being able to sit still for the length of time it took them to write out a six line poem. Patricia added “What is fascinating to see is that even young children are developing their own style and a mature hand, which will stand them in good stead for the future”.

Hallfield School had other winners in the National Competition, Rohan Motwani aged 4 and Aroun Kalyana aged 7.

The competition held every year has entries from all over the country. Patricia said “This year the entries have proved beyond any doubt that schools are indeed teaching handwriting and that children are learning to write and to write very well”.

Art

Year 3:

The Year 3s have created a logo representing their identity and will be decorating their alien with their designs. One pupil said how much he loved doing the alien project in his sketch book – a great testament to the enjoyment aspect of education.

Year 4:

In Year 4, after being introduced to Hunderwasser and Gaudi, their imaginations went wild, their architectural ideas were stretched and they created some amazing buildings.

Year 5:

Collages were the key to jungle-themed artwork in Year 5 this term, resulting in a collaborative piece being sent to the Malvern St. James Junior Art Festival held on Saturday 21st March.

Year 6:

Year 6 have developed their portrait skills with some amazing results. We looked at a few examples of work from different artists and the children even surprised themselves!
