Hockey and Football Tournament
On Friday 26th September, the sports fields once more rang out with the enthusiastic cries of last year’s Year 6 boys and girls as they returned for the annual Football and Hockey tournament arranged by Mr Tobin and Miss Smith. About forty past pupils, fifteen of them girls, attended to say hello to each other and their old teachers – and to see if anything had changed in their brief absence!

Beetle Drive
On Saturday 23rd January at 5pm, several bewildered but intrepid families gathered in the School hall at the invitation of the Parents’ Association to participate in a Beetle Drive, the first of its kind at Hallfield School.
The fact that they turned up not knowing what they were letting themselves in for is a testament to their blind faith and optimism – or the fact that there was nothing good on the telly and a slice of delicious pizza and a drink seemed like a good idea. Led by the intrepid entomologist Mr Shackleton, the evening got off to a cautious start as players learned the rules of this not very complex but very funny and addictive dice game. After three or four games everyone had got the hang of it, though the progressive nature of the game still confounded some players. At the whistle, dice were thrown, pencils flew over the paper, shrieks of hysteria filled the air and the frenzied pace continued till someone shouted ‘Beetle’ and so scores were totted up before the next round began.
There was a brief interlude filled by eating and drinking before the second half started and continued at a cracking pace. By 7pm the prizes had been won, the raffle had been drawn and everyone staggered off home having spent two hours of fun with their family – and not a computer game in sight!

Old Hallfieldian Recieves a Knighthood
Sir David Samworth, already a CBE, was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours and received his honour from Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal at a ceremony at
Buckingham Palace.
Sir David was at Hallfield from 1942-49 going on to Uppingham. He is one of four brothers who followed in their father’s footsteps in coming to Hallfield and whose generous donation of £20,000 helped build the pavilion.

Sir David, a retired businessman, whose family own the food manufacturing empire Samworth Brothers employing 6,000 people in the Midlands and Cornwall, has devoted many years to charity work.
He is the major sponsor of three academies in the East Midlands, and his family charitable trust, the Samworth Foundation, is active in education both in the UK and Africa.
Sir David, a former High Sheriff of Leicestershire said, “We have been spending more time in Africa helping HIV orphans in Kenya and Tanzania. They are so grateful for any help you can give them; they are living with members of their families on a dollar a day. It makes you thankful for what you have got”.
Sir David inherited the business, that includes the famous Ginsters brand, from his father in 1955 and ran it with his brothers Frank and John, stepping down as chairman 50 years later in 2005.
The Hallfieldian
• Play equipment for the Upper School playground (pogo sticks, space hoppers, bats)
• Sandbox and cover for the Pre-Prep playground • Three wooden picnic tables for the Pre-Prep playground
• Bird table for the Kindergarten • Display case for the Pre-Prep children • Line marking equipment for the sports fields • Relief printing press for the Art room • Funds for the Children’s Council for playground equipment for both Pre-Pre and Upper School
The criteria for these donations is that they should be for things not normally affordable in the yearly budget, and that will be for the benefit of a large number of the pupils, not just specific groups. The staff and children are most grateful to the PA for their generous help and also for the family activities that the committee organise throughout the year.
The Summer Ball
This year the Summer Ball was held at the Edgbaston Golf Club on Saturday 6th June.
Parents, governors and staff put on their ‘posh frocks’ and dinner jackets for the event and helped raise over £900 for the Parents Association Fund.
A game of ‘heads and tails’ was played with a cash prize awarded for the last person standing. Following a delicious three course meal the band ‘Check Mate’ played and many couples danced the night away to sounds from the seventies.
