Old Hallfieldians

Message from Sanjeev Kumar, the ‘Old Hallfieldian Society’ Chairman

Attention Year 6! You will be leaving Hallfield soon!

When you do, one of your very first tasks, and perhaps the most important, is to become an active member of the Old Hallfieldian Society.

The society is an organisation that was established by a previous Headmaster, Mr Hackett, almost 12 years ago – which exists to provide a link to the school when you leave. It is important for you to remain connected to Hallfield, as it is the place which will provide the foundation to your education, which eventually will lead to the career that you choose. Hallfield will always be your first stepping stone as you go onwards and upwards in life, and the society would love to know of your progress and share your proudest moments with you, making us proud of your achievements.

Of course Hallfield is not only about learning; I’m sure you have had some fun too and have made many friends. But inevitably as time goes on, you may drift apart. By being an active member, the society provides a means of keeping touch, and organises regular events for members, of all ages.

Some of things that we did this year:

• Football & Hockey Tournament. Our thanks to Mr Tobin, Miss Smith and Mr Thackway for organising this event for around 50 recent leavers.

• Bowling at Bowlplex in Fiveways. Our thanks to Mr Sangha and the Headmaster for managing this event for 30 recent leavers.

• 34 recent leavers enjoyed a great quiz night organised by Mr Tobin and ably assisted by Mrs Mountford, the Headmaster, Mrs Cartwright and Mrs Dosanjh.

• Golf Tournament, Old Hallfieldians vs. West Old Boys. Hallfield narrowly beat West House to regain the trophy. Our thanks to Mr Bevan for organising and Mr Wall and Mrs Kaye for their assistance. Congratulations to the Captain of the team, Julian Watson, for his team’s fine performance and making us proud!

Also a huge thank you to Mrs Hooper for all her assistance, not only attending and organising the events above, but also in ensuring that the society runs so well and smoothly.

So it is almost time to leave. Please make sure you join the Old Hallfieldians Society, and we look forward to you making us proud!

Old Hallfieldians Go Bowling

A group of leavers from July 2008 met on Saturday 16th May at the Bowlplex for an afternoon of bowling.

This is just one of the activities run by the Old Hallfieldian Committee which meets regularly to discuss events, competitions and sports matches for past pupils.

If you would like any further information or you are an old pupil and feel you would like to contribute to the committee please contact us on 0121 454 1496.

Masterminds!

On Friday 30th January 34 young Hallfieldians returned to School to pit their wits against the immense bank of general knowledge questions that Mr Tobin has at his fingertips.

Old Hallfieldian Cycles Through the Americas

Old Halfieldian Andrew Finlay, known as ‘Fin’, left Hallfield in 1990 at the age of 13 to go to Oundle.

In August 2009, he embarked on an epic cycle journey, ‘Going South’ from Alaska to Argentina along with a group of environmentalists in search of solutions to global warming. The aim is to show how different parts of the world are contributing to greenhouse emissions in an ongoing video blog and a 13-part television series. The expedition is also in search of solutions to climate change by undertaking 26 innovative projects. The team will cycle a distance of 25,000 miles and visit 21 countries over eight months.

Andrew started his working life as an environmental manager helping local schools to become ‘eco-schools’ and later embarked on a Masters of Tropical Coastal Management. This brought him all the way to the Philippines and then to Fiji and the Marshall Islands, where he became advisor to their Environmental Protection Authority.

Appearing as a key witness in a High Court case against a large construction company that caused environmental damage to the Island, he helped the Government win their first ever environmental case in the High Court, and set a precedent for the prosecution of environment crimes on the Marshall Islands.

During his work on the Marshall Islands, Andrew broke his leg very badly which subsequently became infected, taking a long time to heal. There were doubts whether he would be able to use his leg again so the journey represents an enormous personal achievement for him.

“I have dreamed for a long time about cycling from Alaska to Central America, and ‘Going South’ has given me the opportunity to make the dream a reality. My passions are travelling, helping protect the environment and meeting people with the same interests. Travelling by bicycle enables me to see the world up-close, whilst having minimum impact on the environment”.

You can follow Andrew’s journey through his blog www.going-south.tv/blog/tag/fin

The Old Hallfieldian Society helped sponsor Andrew’s journey. If you know of any Old Hallfieldian who has undertaken some interesting or exciting project please let the Marketing Office know on 0121 410 6706.
