Year 5 Trip to Warwick
In October, the Year 5 children visited Warwick Castle to consolidate the half term’s study about castles and medieval life.
On entering through the barbican and gatehouse, the bailey opened up allowing a view of the old motte built in 1070. The children divided into groups and explored the curtain wall, the gatehouse and both Guys and Caesars Tower. They also explored the dungeon and visited the Kingmaker exhibit that demonstrated the Earl of Warwick getting ready for battle.
Probably the highlight of the day was having the opportunity to chat with the Trebuchet Master and then watching the trebuchet being fired.
The day concluded with a visit to the top of the motte, a bird of prey demonstration, an essential visit to the gift shop and a chance to view the inside of the castle and the glorious furniture and decor.
A wonderful action-packed day that the children thoroughly enjoyed.
Year 5 Science Trip to the Space Centre
In November, Year 5 beamed themselves up to the Space Centre in Leicestershire, as part of their Sun, Moon and Earth programme.
They went on a galactic tour studying the planets in the solar system and their relationship with the sun. They saw the Soyuz Space Module and went on an extra terrestrial ride on the surface of Iona – one of Jupiter’s moons. The Earth isn’t the only planet with its own moon – and one of the highlights of the trip was the virtual crash landing on one of Saturn’s moons!
Narnia – Through the Wardrobe
As a Christmas treat, pupils from the Upper School were taken to the Birmingham Rep to see a production of CS Lewis’ classic story ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ dramatized by Adrian Mitchell.
This magical fairytale tells the story of four young friends who, whilst hiding inside an old wardrobe, stumble upon a parallel universe known as Narnia. It’s a story that has stood the test of time, becoming a classic enjoyed by children and adults alike, and the visit set the mood for Christmas and more treats in store!

The Christmas Story Unfolds in Harborne
Driving past St. John’s Church in Harborne one could be forgiven for not immediately seeing its potential as a venue for a re-enactment of the Christmas Story. But an ingenious use of screens and curtains, and very subdued lighting, transforms this building into a ‘walk-through’ Bethlehem that enthraled the children from Reception.
Members of the congregation play the parts of Joseph and Mary, the wicked King Herod and the Wise Men, but the role of the shepherds is given to the pupils from Reception who travel down candle-lit passages to visit the manger where baby Jesus and his parents are resting.
The children listened intently as the story unfolded – the same well loved story but brought to life most dramatically in these unlikely surroundings.
