An Open Evening to Showcase the Arts
On a hot and humid Tuesday 30th June, pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 took part in our first Evening of Celebration of the Arts at Hallfield.
We started off in the Upper School Hall and were treated to Ballet performances led by Mrs Russell for pupils in Year 1 and 2.
This was followed by two Character Dances, based on Hungarian Peasant style, and a Finale piece by the Year 3 and 4 pupils under the direction of Miss Lucas from Elmhurst.
The dancing continued with Lisa Whiteman’s Dance Crazy groups performing their routines to the popular ‘Please Don’t Stop the Music’ by Rhianna and Abba’s ‘Money, Money, Money’.
Much needed refreshments followed, along with a fantastic exhibition of Art from Year 3 to 6 pupils.
The Year 3 Staircase and Hall Corridor hosted Aliens and Landscapes. Year 4’s work on Amazing Architecture was in the Link Room along with the Miniature Garden Competition. The Art Room
Father and Son Overnight Camp
Mr Batchelor held a father and son camping night on Friday 19th June in the school grounds. It was well attended and children brought their fathers and tents along for the occasion!
After pitching their tents outside the Pavilion, games were set up for everyone to take part in – if somewhat reluctantly on the part of the fathers!
The boys and their dads ate heartily at the barbecue, which finished with mountains of chocolate cake.
In the morning, a breakfast of bacon and eggs was served, before everyone made their weary way home – probably to get some sleep!
Miniature Garden Competition
There’s something very appealing about things in miniature and this competition is always very well supported. An ingenious use of models, tiny props and sections of plants – plus spadefuls of imagination – render the observer feeling like a giant Gulliver in the land of Lilliput.
Nadia Ismail (Year 5) knocked last year’s winner Hannah Macarthur (Year 6) into second place, with Hugo Meering (Year 2) bringing up a close third. Asha Peacock (Year 4) was awarded a Highly Commended.
exhibited Year 6’s Mad Hatters work and Year 5’s masks adorned the white drapes in the Link Room Corridor’s “Masquerade”.
The evening finished with a musical extravaganza back in the Hall, with the String Orchestra opening the proceedings with a Mozart Minuet and an arrangement of Holst’s ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’. The Guitar Ensemble performed ‘Sonatina’ by Carulli, and the Brass Ensemble played a medley of Abba favourites. Next up was the Chamber Choir singing ‘I Am the Wind’ written by Lin Marsh, the adjudicator of this Year’s Inter-House Music Competition. The Choir then raised the roof with ‘Seasons of Love’ from the musical ‘Rent’. The summer theme was reflected in the Flute Choir’s ‘Summertime’ by George Gershwin and an equally famous Tchiakovsky ballet theme. Clarinet and Saxophone Ensemble moved us towards the end of the evening playing the Star Wars theme and an arrangement of ‘The Teddy Bears’ Picnic Party’. The Orchestra rounded off the evening with ‘Hornpipe’ from Handel’s Water Music and the main theme from
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.
