SustainLane.com weighed traditional
environmental factors such as air and
water quality and regional public trans-
portation infrastructure alongside up-to-
the-minute standards like the Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Green Building Rating System®
and local sources of food.
Doing its part as it expands, the
Pennsylvania Convention Center will
undertake ambitious green initiatives that
address air quality, waste minimization,
energy efficiency, water conservation, and
procurement.
Table 31 by Chris Scarduzio is a popular
Philadelphia restaurant and meeting
hotspot that has integrated many unique
environmentally sustainable initiatives into
its daily operations. This steakhouse-
bistro, located in the Comcast Center,
serves only organic meats and gets
almost all of its produce from two local
organic farmers. The restaurant even
recycles its excess cooking oil with the
help of a company that converts it into
automobile fuel.
Even the city’s sports franchises have
developed their own groundbreaking ini-
tiatives. For example, the Philadelphia
Eagles tickets and programs are printed
on recycled paper, while the plastic cups
used by stadium vendors are made of
corn-based material that disintegrates in
just 50 days instead of three years.
In May of 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies
became the first Major League Baseball
team to join the EPA’s “Green Power
Partnership” program. As part of their
conservation efforts, the Phillies have pur-
chased 20 million kilowatt-hours of
Green-e-certified renewable energy cer-
tificates. According to the EPA, the deal
represents the largest single purchase of
100 percent renewable energy in profes-
sional sports history and is equivalent to
the planting of 100,000 trees.
